Title: Get Your Money Together: Kickstarter for Badass Personal Finance Book
Post by: arebelspy on October 10, 2017, 01:24:51 PM
Mustachian and forum member monstermonster has combined years of expertise in the personal finance arena with wit and humor to create a personal finance book for the Internet age. Yes, it's a personal finance book WITH CATS.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2052814389/get-your-money-together-your-purr-fect-finance-wor (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2052814389/get-your-money-together-your-purr-fect-finance-wor)

It went live just today, and pledges in the first 48 hours are crucial for getting it "featured" by Kickstarter. So if you can go donate, do so! Even the minimum amount is helpful, as it counts as an extra unique donation.

Even if you feel like you--a badass Mustachian--don't need a personal finance book, it makes a great gift for friends and family who might be less financially literate than you. ;)

And really, with adorable illustrations styled like this:
(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/018/664/889/ab70ff20a7a7555f997d289f38a47be6_original.gif?w=680&fit=max&v=1507521469&auto=format&gif-q=50&q=92&s=46aa42522bf7e2ce0f1c7fb3a47f26b0)    (https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/018/662/306/08e91913900d9f1d04b270013db21ed5_original.png?w=680&fit=max&v=1507503258&auto=format&lossless=true&s=73dde894fe4d0656d3af8e144d0dd1d9)

Who wouldn't love it?

Go watch the video on the Kickstarter page (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2052814389/get-your-money-together-your-purr-fect-finance-wor) and tell me it's not amazing.

Go back this now, it's an awesome project by one of our own!  :)

You're too sweet, ARS. Thank you <3 <3 <3

Lots of mustachian bits in this book, but with a little less cursing and a little more cats than MMM!

I pledged, despite the total lack of dogs.
One person who bought the "your cat included" perk already requested it actually be a picture of their dog. So there will be at least one dog.

Maybe a stretch goal for some huge amount of money could be a separate edition with dogs... :-)

You'd have to come up with a lot more puns.

That would be barking mad. A bone-headed plan. If she did that we'd put her in the doghouse.

Tomorrow AM we should all hit the Twitter share button at the same time and see if we can get this to trend. Its so cool what happens if trending kicks in.

Having been in MM's spot on something like this not long ago, I was blown away by how the fire spread through twitter that day.

Sounds great! How about 9 am Eastern Time?

If you aren't available at that time, just tweet as soon as possible after 9.

Works for me!

MM - have you got a hashtag going for this thing?

So she's got $3000 to go.

If she hits it in the next 60hrs, I'm taking Momma out for Cheeseburgers to celebrate. Maybe even vegan cheeseburgers since this is a MM thing.

Fun facts from my massive spreadsheet

Current rate of pledges: 3 per hour.
If I can sustain that, that puts me at between 34-43 hours til I reach the goal. But it's definitely slowing down. I did just get some pickups from internet celebrities so that's helping.

Paula from Afford Anything just got back into town from the MMM chautauqua and she is going to share, and I have a few other potential bites.

Here's the thing: I really want to hit the damn goal before Wednesday night when I leave for Camp Mustache Canada...but that's seeming unlikely?

Honestly the Queer Relationships lost it for me. Right then. Yet wow, it is very entertaining ~

Just my two cents for what it is worth. You want it to appeal to everyone. It really is unique, fun and keeps your attention.

Since MMM is endorsing it, and it was very entertaining plus educational, I'd probably drop that word. It's an in your face type of word that usually attached to an agenda or porn, something not G rated, sadly. JMHO of course. Address it fully, just keep the wording to something which doesn't define a sexual desire (by default) but an arrangement instead. No words come to mind at this moment.Example- If a best friend were ill, I may have married her/him to keep her alive maintaining health benefits. Considering I was unmarried. Also as someone else addressed, if there is cussing omit it. Use slang or funny terms instead. Keeping it light hearted.

I'd avoid anything controversial while still covering all subjects, fully. The first decade of my working life was owning a marketing company disguised as a Welcome Service for newcomers while working for our County promoting Tourism. We became the fastest growing County in California during that time and turned a little hole in the wall Visitors Center into a designated California Welcome Center. Avoided anything remotely close to controversial....mainly promoting recreation since that is our Counties resource. Again, these ideas are just my once cents worth. Love the cat!!

Erica, I'm not interested in appealing to anyone who finds the fact that providing information specific to same-sex relationships is a turn off. I don't consider gay marriage controversial to my target demo, rather a selling proposition.

I'm queer, and about half of my clients are queer. If you think the fact that queer folks need information that is specific to their concerns off-putting, my stuff is not for you (for example, same-sex second-parent adoption is still illegal in many states, causing much more complicated financial issues when planning for education and taxes.)

Dave Ramsey provides homophobic education, if you'd prefer to ignore the fact that queer relationships exist and have specific needs. I'm not willing to ignore that.

As you know from marketing, the riches are in the niches, not in trying to appeal to everyone.

The queer-friendly/feminist aspect is one of the main reasons I supported it. I know from my gay and trans friends (and from being a single woman in a HCOL area) that some aspects of economics/personal finance can be very different, and more difficult, when you are not in a "traditional" family structure. There is a real need for financial advice that is inclusive for that segment.

Erica - I hear your message on choosing words carefully, but I also know M^2 knows her demographic and knows they are comfortable with the words she chooses. I also know she needs to be a bit edgy and out there and that is what gives her a leg-up. (Ahem)

She's got this. She knows what she's aiming for, and if you look at those donations, she's on target for it.

Yep. Finances are also complex for couples choosing to not get married, for whatever reason. When I was in a cohabitating but not married relationship, I had a tough time finding good information that applies to my needs.

A small reminder that the supreme court case that won same-sex marriage for all states in the US was about taxes.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Windsor)

Yes! My wife and I forked over so much money before the fall of DOMA, getting all the 'extra' marriage paperwork in order. We didn't have a guide, and it was so confusing, and often contradictory, and stupidly stressful. Having a book that helps cohabitating people get thing sorted is going to be. so. OSSUM.

Possible you've been mistaken for MMM.

Ah, that is possible. It has happened before.

Yeah, posted on the forums doesn't mean MMM-endorsed. More like "something that someone that signed up for his forum said."  :)

I was thinking of asking him to tweet this when it launched (and I started the thread), but he's been in Ecuador, so I hadn't done so.

Not to pile on Erica here, but I do want to chime in a bit on this.

Someone's sexuality isn't controversial, provided that they're not harming anyone else. I don't think monstermonster or anyone else should cater to the insecurities of anyone else who feels otherwise. I know you were only trying to be helpful, but there are facets of your post that make me think of the way I was as a teen, before someone smacked me upside the head. Particularly the part about "in your face".

This was my attitude towards gay people as a teen. "I'm fine with it as long as it isn't in my face." A friend eventually made me realize that nothing about homosexuality is any more "in my face" than heterosexuality is. I just didn't recognize it because I'm heterosexual, and the world is made to accommodate that.

There are entire chapters of personal finance literature dedicated the the financial ins and outs of having a baby. Since most children are born as the result of heterosexual sex, and then raised by one or both of the heterosexuals involved, these chapters tend to reflect a strong, heterosexual bias. And that's fine, just so long as we all recognize that this is just as "in your face" as the Get Your Money Together project is when they say they address queer issues. Anyone to whom these sections do not apply, can skip them, I'm sure. Anyone made uncomfortable can either skip the workbook all together, or learn to deal with the discomfort.

Lastly, queer is not a pornographic word. I'm not sure where this misconception came from.

Hope that helps!

AWW YOU ALL MAKE MY GAY HEART SO MANY SIZES BIGGER.

To be fair, I do have a queer agenda. It is to get all the queers cat-based purrsonal finance education. RAWR!

Since MMM is endorsing it, and it was very entertaining plus educational, I'd probably drop that word.

Is he? That's awesome. I was thinking a tweet from him would give this a boost.

Hey, ARS, now that he's back from Ecuador, willing to send the kickstarter over to him? One pitch for him is it is mustachianism for a less-affluent set ;)

MM the "queer relationships" term popped off the page for me too.  Noticeable, but not in a bad way.   Mostly, because it is a term I had never heard used before.   I don't think of these relationships as strange, and the accounting / PFP term used in our studies was a lot more boring.

Even in Canada, I 100% agree that this is a underserved  / critical topic that needs to be addressed because so many think common law relationships (of all types) now have the same rights as married ones do, but for estate planning and separation issues, they certainly do not, (province dependent).   Even blended married families have unusual situations and issues about money and student loan applications, estate planning, etc.

A term popping off the page is exactly what you need for your marketing, and it complements the cats and pun counter.

The feminist and queer-friendly angle was part of what made it appealing to me, and what made me comfortable sending it out to my friends! None of us (mostly ladies) need more financial advice that's based around the assumption that we'll all get heterosexual-married and have babies. Since MMM is endorsing it, and it was very entertaining plus educational, I'd probably drop that word.

Is he? That's awesome. I was thinking a tweet from him would give this a boost.

Knowing him, I think he'd be in favor of the queer issues being addressed.

Hey, ARS, now that he's back from Ecuador, willing to send the kickstarter over to him? One pitch for him is it is mustachianism for a less-affluent set ;)

I do not believe he is yet, I think week 2 is about to start.  (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Huzzah!

The cool thing will be post tipping point, where it goes viral and you're ranting about the CMC connection and not being able to address all the media requests. ;)

I'm straight and don't know a single Bowie song and I've never had a cat and I don't know if I've ever worn glitter in my adult life. But I think your niche is awesome and I support it entirely.

I hope this goes crazy for you!

Someone help me out gently here, please. I always thought that if a person who identifies as heterosexual called someone who identifies as homosexual "queer" that it was considered a slur and beyond rude. I've heard my gay friends refer to themselves as "queer", but I thought it was, I dunno, an inside term, so to speak?

Maybe I'm just hopelessly out of it. Mostly I just call my gay friends by their names, not by a label. Dunno.

Also, I admire Erica's willingness to voice her concerns, based on her own experience. I am not saying that I am in agreement. However, since the topic's been broached, I am seeking to understand the use of this specific term.

And no misguided hate, please. I've loved and lost more gay friends than I care to count. The silver lining, if there is one, is at least nowadays they're dying of old age. Damn it.

Finally, apologies for the late response. I missed this thread completely until now. Congratulations on your success, M2!

BTW, my kitty, who I inherited when her gay daddy died, completely approves. She can't wait to get her own copy so she can chew all the corners.

Hey Dicey, my perspective is that the non-pejorative uses of the word queer is a generational thing.

I was born in 1980. My world was formed by Ryan White, Matthew Sheppard, Ellen DeGeneres. Gay culture was confined to the big cities. As a kid I knew about funny men because of the AIDS epidemic. I didn't women could also be funny until 1993, when Ellen DeGeneres caused such a stir. The state mandated sexual education at my school was strictly about how babies were made. Anything extraneous to babies was left out, and I had no idea women could have orgasms until one very surprising day in the early 90's. We played smear the queer at recess, the populace called for ghettoization of anyone with AIDS. There was no Gay Straight Alliance. The internet didn't really exist. Don't Ask, Don't Tell was seen as a progressive and merciful policy. "That's so gay" rang through the halls of my highschool to note anything stupid, dumb, or ugly. I was tainted. It was isolating. I wanted to die. Hearing the word queer from a heterosexual person could never be anything besides an epitaph, and it was rarely positive even from a homosexual person.

Adults born 10 or 15 years after me had a completely different experience. People with HIV lived. Will and Grace was on mainstream TV. Queer as Folk, and the L word were on the edgier channels. Gay culture cropped up in smaller cities, even towns. Civil unions were declared legal. Gay Straight Alliances were formed in schools. Safe spaces. Sexuality was a discussion people were having. The internet provides support and community. To these slightly younger people, the reclamation of the word queer was a powerful thing. To a half generation younger than me, queer is a word that's sometimes negative, and sometimes positive, depending on the speaker. Much like the reclamation of racial pejoratives among the subjugated class.

Now, the word has dropped even more of it's negative connotations, thanks to the transgender and pansexual movements. The boxes for gay, straight, and bi-sexual are too confining. Especially when viewed through the idea that allowing for only two genders is equally confining. If you happen to be a gender fluid young person, and you're making eyes at someone who was genetically born male but is taking androgen blockers because she definitely know's she's a fabulous girl...well, what is that? What word could you use to encompass what you're feeling? You aren't gay, and you aren't straight, but you can certainly be queer. So now, for people born 20 to 25 years after me, queer is just what they are. Sure, sometimes the word gets miss-used by assholes, but fuck that noise.

So, that leaves us with your question: if a person who identifies as heterosexual called someone who identifies as homosexual "queer" that it was considered a slur. The answer is, it depends. I shudder when I encounter the word queer; MonsterMonster embraces it. Different people, slightly different generations. As with many personal things, the best thing to do is simply ask the person directly their opinion.

To close this wall of text, I'll point out that your question is very obviously from a standpoint of curiosity and a desire to learn. Thanks for being cool.

SS did an excellent write up - I am just on the cusp, also growing up in a very homophobic bible-thumping small city but being 7 years younger than her, I heard queer as a slur at first and then was “present” in the queer community when it started to be reclaimed in my late teens. For my target audience (under 35), queer is seen as an umbrella term for the GLBTQIIA community because our acronym got too long and unpronounceable for the reasons SS mentioned, and folks don’t want to be defined as narrowly as the lesbian/gay labels. There’s a lot of “queer relationships” that may seem to be straight (a trans man and a lesbian for example) to an outside gaze, and would not be defined as same-sex relationships, hence use of the term.

This sounds like a good book for my step-son who just married his partner.  They love cats and plan to adopt 2 boys.  We were recently on a cruise and the couple at our dinner table was nice but very christian and from the South.  When they started asking about kids and we said Scott just got married. They asked what his wife did and we referred to him as spouse during the conversation.  We have never hid it before that he married a man but it felt like the safe thing to do since we had to eat dinner with them for 7 nights.   The whole thing left us feeling weird but by then we had learned how conservative and religious they were and we didn't feel like anything would be gained by telling them.

OH MY GOD WE ARE ONLY $400 FROM THE GOAL WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHATTT

NOW IT'S LESSSSSSSS THAN $250!

Seriously though, you're obviously going to get it funded, now's the time to promote your stretch goal(s).  It's obvious from our conversation at the table the other day that you gave a lot of thought to pricing right to help people without putting the book out of reach financially, and about what you could afford to pay the other content contributors, and about how to harness the project to help others through the pay it forward option, etc.  So add some updates, and toot those horns, and tell us more about your thinking, your hopes and dreams!  :-)

I love real books, but need to get my debt paid off, plus figured enough of the book might not be relevant to me (being Cdn) that I opted for the E-book only, but having a print copy go to someone else.  Having met you, and hearing your passion for helping others, that was an easy decision.  But maybe others would like to hear more about where those paper copies are going to go?
