Get rid of the car?
« on: February 19, 2016, 12:51:11 PM »
I have a 2009 Ford Ranger that has not seemed to have depreciated much (in my mind due to a combination of being a 4x4 truck and a discontinued reliable design and getting a very good deal on it). I have only had to replace the front brakes and change the oil. I know they are reliable but I am not mechanically inclined and I feel like I have gotten lucky with the resale value and it may be time to "sell high" so to speak as it gets older and to avoid costly future repairs. Rust is starting to become moderately noticeable maybe a couple years worse than it should be for its age due to snow and salt here- no other issues to note.

Am I out to lunch here and it should probably keep holding its value and providing reliable service to me into the future?

The vehicle seems to be worth around 13,500-15,500 as best as I can tell from nearby selling prices (CAD). So I could find a suitable replacement for sure.

I only drive around 10-50kms a week so the gas mileage is not really of any consideration to me.

I think selling and paying cash for something a little smaller couldn't hurt.  Even with low mileage, you would still be saving if you had a vehicle that had better gas mileage (plus you're doing all the healthy-responsible-environmental decisions that way too).

On the other hand, if you're just selling to trade up to a newer model, you might be doing yourself a disservice on fees/insurance.

You might be better off youtubing things as they come up and become more mechanically inclined.  Certain maintenance can help keep a vehicle up to par.

Another thing to look around at is what kinds of trouble your model has... I had a vehicle that was notorious for transmissions not lasting after a certain point, so once I was looking at replacing it a second time, I got rid of it.

I'd have to disagree, as rust is something that generally can't be repaired cost effectively.  I see two choices: sell now while it still has decent value, or keep it until it falls apart and then sell it for parts for a few bucks.  Which one you pick depends on how fast you think it's going to deteriorate and the replacement options that are available to you.

I'm in the same boat with my '98 F150, which has low miles and runs well, but has body/frame rust that gets a little worse every year.  I'm keeping my eyes open for potential replacements in locales that aren't likely to have rust.  So far I'm not finding much that wouldn't involve paying more money that my current truck is worth for something that has more miles on it.  But I'm not in a hurry; I'll just keep an eye out and take an opportunity if it arises.  If one doesn't arise, I'll keep the current truck until it rusts out from under me and then replace it with the most cost-efficient thing I can find at the time.  Getting the itch to buy now usually leads to paying too much.
