Thumbs up for permaculture. Originating in Oz with two guys, it initially meant 'permanent agriculture' but has become 'permanent culture'. Mustachianism is quite permaculturish.
Basically: Take the overview, use what you have, plan efficiently for the long term. Eg: Plant your herb garden close to the kitchen because you will use it if you do! Use perennial crops rather than annuals because the plant tends to be more productive.
Oh there is so much, and it is so "clever" or just "common sense" (in the same way that common sense isn't common!!).
For those REALLY interested, Findhorn Ecovillage do a 4-week Ecovillage Training course which is awesome, awesome, awesome (this is in Scotland).
