For those of you who use MINT....
« on: June 16, 2016, 03:51:29 PM »
I am fairly new to using this program as a budgeting tool, so I still have some learning to do. But, I haven't figure this out and wondering if it is even possible....so I need some help.

How do you divide up a transaction? For example : I have  $250.00 medical bill, 70.00 for groceries, and $12.00 for a gift all on a credit card transaction. It will only let me categorize it as one of those three things (I have it under medical since that's the  bulk), but it then has all of my balances and budgets off because of it.

Is there a way to sub categorize in this program?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Unless you paid for all three at the same place and same time (some grocery/doctor/gift store?), the credit card transactions should be coming in as separate transactions. Go to the transactions tab at the top and see how it breaks out. It may be that you just need to select the correct category for each transaction.

If you have a transaction that contains things for two different categories - like say you went to Target and bought a shirt (clothing/shopping category) and a few groceries as well and wanted to split that single transaction into two and categorize each appropriately, then you would click on the transaction "edit details" tab, and look at the upper right side for the Y looking button that will allow you to split the transaction into however you'd like to categorize it.

Also, it doesn't allow you to split it until it clears

Yes, and that is really annoying. After a few days, I've forgotten / stopped caring. I wish you could do it right away.

Not all credit cards will connect with Mint. I have two cards and only one will connect, the other only shows up when the payment leaves my bank account. Thankfully, I use that card a lot less.

I often pick up a card/gift and carton of milk when I fill my prescription at CVS, all on one transaction.

My work arround it to tag the transaction "split it later" and add a note that will help me later. Later I can find the transactions by tag, split them, and remove the tag. Still, it's much more annoying than it would be if I could split it right away.

That's a good idea. I don't maximize the usefulness of tags on, well, anything. Then I see good ideas and remember it.

I use ynab now, which allows you to split immediately.
