FIRE but dont have long term plans?
« on: December 23, 2017, 11:33:59 AM »
(single, age 47, no kids, easy 100k job that i dont enjoy much)

apparently i can FIRE now thx to this forum but then realized that my short term expenses will go up.
so work an extra 9months to build a 'go wild' fund.

if i FIRE in late 2018, my short term plans are (assuming i sell the house):
travel 1-2 weeks a month, every month.
multiplayer video game binge the other weeks.
Hookers + blow

after 2-3yrs, i expect the novelty will wear off.
and i can see myself thinking now what?

Short answer: pick up a copy of Ernie Zielinski's "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" at the library and do a "Get a Life tree".

Long answer:
learn a foreign language, or several - this helps with your travels
learn how to play an instrument
take up a physical challenge
take up a hobby that creates things, make gifts for others
volunteer to help others
read - philosophy, history, biographies, fiction...
take the college classes you couldn't fit into your schedule the first time around

Head over to early-retirement.org and read the entire "What Did You Do Today" thread for inspiration.

You can find the get a life tree concept easily on google image. The wheel of life can also be helpfull. Best of luck in finding your path.

@Dr. Doom who used to frequent these journals once upon a time, wrote a great article on finding out what to do.

I guess Dr. Doom is so busy with his FIRE'ed life that he no longer frequents this forum or updates his blog :-(
All of the articles on his blog are fantastic!!!!

I posted a similar question (altough from a different perspective) 2 months ago. While I am still figuring out my path I found the replies to be most useful.

Luckily you will have a lot of time to figure out what you'd like to do next. ;) You don't need to have your retirement planned out and locked down in advance. Just start the process and see where it takes you.

A sentence that's never been said: "I'm sick of hookers and blow"

I personally wouldn't worry about lack of long term plans, but I also don't understand the concept of boredom in these modern times, especially for one with freedom to choose options most others can't.  If that life wears off after a couple years, which is highly likely, there are an infinite number of things to pursue and a very finite amount of time to do so.  Get to it :-)
