Financial Literacy Classes?
« on: October 20, 2016, 10:12:52 AM »
Hey all,

I have a friend who is struggling to get by on a very modest income, but the #1 problem she is facing (in my opinion) is her husband's spending habits.  He's constantly spending their food budget on little packaged snacks, and regularly brings home things they don't need on a rent-to-own basis, and then a few months later when they can't keep up the payments the item gets reclaimed.  She's tried showing him blogs like Mr Money Mustache and others, but he's not interested in reading things online, so I'm hoping he would be more open to attending some kind of financial literacy class with her. Even something like a Dave Ramsey class would be a nudge in the right direction. I think he would be more open to learning and improving if they are learning together.

Can anyone here recommend in-person classes or programs that would be available in Florida? Or point me in the right direction to look for other options?

This does not answer your question, but does this person actually want to change?

You can lead the horse to water but you cant make it drink.

What's wrong with Dave Ramsey? I mean, lots is wrong with Dave Ramsey if you're in MMM world, but for the average person his class is great. Widely available, well structured, has a built in support group, often helps convert spouses to the program because they are surrounded by people in IRL who are all on the same page...yeah, we MMMers know his investment advice is crap, some people don't like the religious angle, and his jokes are pretty cheesy, but...his stuff works pretty well for the situation you're describing.

This. I have seen it happen for people and completely change their lives. It is amazing how much a relationship can change when debt/money is not such a headache. Maybe your friend can come at it from that angle, help the tension in the marriage? For me, to get my wife on board, it had to do with exposing her to other perspectives and possibilities. I think then she saw the logic in MMM/frugality vs me being a nut over money and savings.
