Financial Advice Disclaimer & Topics to Avoid
« on: March 26, 2019, 04:27:14 PM »
Hello All,

I'm beginning to create my own website/blog that will primarily be on FIRE related topics. Topics would range from different careers (and associated retirement plans), lifestyle topics, spending, the usual FIRE stuff, but I'll be focusing writing from my lense as a government employee.  However, I'm concerned about writing financial advice.  I'm aware you are not allowed to give individually tailored advice (although hypothetical case studies could be based on individuals?) or advice on buying/selling specific securities, but I'm not sure of any other potential pitfalls.  I'm currently live in CA, so I believe I would be subject to any federal/state/SEC laws.  If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Don't want to give any advice - don't want to break any SEC regs or financial laws!

:)

Obviously, research the laws and regs. If necessary, consult a lawyer competent in financial advisory law to ensure you are in the clear. Fwiw, I think a blog focused on govt employees' viewpoint would be a wonderful thing.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
