Trying to get my family to join in
« on: April 01, 2015, 09:00:12 AM »
So little background, im 19 live with mum and dad. Will be going back to education to become a nurse (expecting 5 years of education) Soon to be working a part time job in the evenings, with an annual income of £6120

My total networth, about £1500

my parents networth on the other hand is like this

liabilities £49000
- £46000 mortgage
-£3000 credit card bills
Assets (house included at estimate) £64000
Cash £2500

Im trying to bring them into the life of frugality because they've been chained to a mortgage most of their life and i feel they end up spending too much money on things we don't really need. I'm trying to get them to switch over to this new lifestyle but they're stuck in their old ways.

Are there any good threads i could link to them for them to read. As trying to get them to read the whole blog is asking too much of them sadly as of right now.

Unfortunately I haven't had the best of luck in this arena. I have family that is horrible with money and as one of the few responsible ones in the lot, I fear I'll have to subsidize them in the future when they can no longer work.

Best of luck with your family and with your education!

How about showing them one MMM blog post at a time?  Even printing it out for them?  Making it the topic for a family conversation?

In addition, showing them by your example what and how things can be done should also help.  (BTW, for a 19-year-old you are doing AMAZINGLY well.)

i could try that with my mum but my dad is the type that will nod off at the first thought of reading. can't blame him though he works a lot.

I've even made an expenses spreadsheet for them that will pay off the mortgage in 6 years with a bit of wiggleroom for their own sanity(luxurys)

Start with your Mum, then.  But do realize that in the end you can't force them to see reason.  If that is the way things work out, try to emotionally distance yourself from the possible financial implosion they might be headed for.

Good luck.

Lead by example is the best way to show someone a new path.

Agreed.  But don't keep what you do under your hat.  In that regard, lead from the front by showing what you are doing.  Talk about it.  Post notes on the fridge door.  Whatever.

Good luck.
