My father in law was just bragging to me about his 08 Jeep with 50K.   Course he doesn't own a lake house and retired at age 48.

Just tell him -- "yeah, I thought about a newer car but decided to put money in the kids college fund instead."

We have a 2004 Corolla with something like 130k miles. It still feels like a new car. The only cosmetic issue is some water trapped in one of the taillights. I can't imagine wanting to trade it in. I don't understand people who think a car >5 years old is old.

Wow, I was just looking at replacing my wife's 1998 Saab 9000 with 204,000 miles with a 2009 Saab with 95,000 miles, and I was thinking how new that car would be!  My current newest car is a 2004.

Although when I first met my wife, back in 1987, her parents were both driving around in 1960s Volvos (a 120 sedan and a 120 wagon).  Nowadays those are classics, but back then they were just old, so I don't get any crap from my FiL regarding the age of my cars.

my father in law looks at my 2009 Honda Accord and says "time for a new car"

"Gee, that's a really nice offer, Dad.  I'll take it in red!"

2013, 33k miles on it.  I put on 20k miles a year, I'd envision at least another 6-7 years at that rate.

As much as it would be nice to have a more fiscally aware father in law the odds are against you. He has an expensive opinion. Could be worse though, he could be trying to sell you on the concept of house poor...

"In a few years you can get a million-dollar house." my FIL said after our house warming party. True story.

Surprising how many people here have fancy new cars. My daily driver is 30 years old, and when it's dry and not down near freezing I ride my 45 year old bike.

I live in Calgary, Canada. A big car town, and a new car town.
People have "car pride."
I look at cars as a financial IQ test. The more costly yours is, the lower your score.
At every traffic light people post their own scores, as they idle, and seem more proud the lower the results.
"I'm working one full year to buy this metal toy!"
"In 5 years I'll do it again."
Duh.

Dude has a lake house. He's actually probably a good guy to learn from on some things about money.

I don't think that necessarily follows. Could well be the opposite.

1998 Ford Escort Cpe - 112,000 miles and in good shape. I had planned to replace it early next year, but the more I think about it the less I'm inclined to get a new/used car as long as this one is still running fine.

Do it!  I have a 2008 9-3 Wagon 6spd I bought with 75k.  Now has 125k.  Overall, its been reliable and pretty easy to maintain.  I did violate MMM policy by spending $12.2K on it 3.5 years ago though.
