Executricks by Stanley Bing - Retire at work.....Read the book?
« on: September 14, 2014, 05:38:02 PM »
I read the book "Retire at Work" describing how to maintain and manage your present job while maximizing free time. Interesting concept and I've been using it for the past year.

Last year, I announced my retirement to my Manager. Because of a unique technical position I'm qualified for and hold, he asked me if I would stay on. I have several offices with staff under me. I also have access to the company IT network at home along with a smart phone tied into the enterprise network.

Both he and the division director said if I handled technical policy issues, they wouldn't interfere with me. So, having that and financial independence, I've been working 4 hours a day, Fridays off, and 6 weeks vacation.

The way I see it, I'll keep this up, have a full time salary, and work part time. Anytime this becomes unsustainable, I'll just retire...

That's awesome... I'm hoping for a similar arrangement in a few years when I'm ready to give notice... The most valuable part of what I do, I could do part time and from anywhere... But no guarantee others will realize that : )

I know a lot of people I worked with would have taken 20-30 hours jobs any day of the week. In a lot of fields it is hard to make that math work out for that though. I also no a bunch of people that did what we called "rest and vest" where you spend 12-18 months doing as little work as possible until your 2 million in options vested. In general it takes a company a long time to eliminated nonproductive people.

Sounds interesting, I might have to check it out. OP, sounds like you have a great situation set up.

I'm facing a similar decision myself soon. I hit FI some time ago, and took a year-long sabbatical from my job last November in anticipation of retiring permanently (keeping the job active gave me certain benefits, a safety net in case I decided retirement wasn't for me yet, and made it an easier concept for my wife to handle). Now I either have to go back this November, or make the sabbatical permanent (i.e., retire). I'm leaning towards doing something similar -- go back and stay only as long as I like it. Don't know if that will take 2 weeks, 2 months, or 2 years! I know the prospect of getting up on a schedule already sounds horrible, so it might be closer to 2 weeks.

Being FI makes it a lot easier to stand up to corporate minutiae and the stress that brings along. One of the Managers at work today asked me casually, when I planned to retire. I replied "When I get enough of being at work."

She added, "But you look so happy!", and her assistant added, "You're the only happy one around here!"

Those comments said it all!

Looks like they renamed it for the paperback version: How to Relax Without Getting the Axe: A Survival Guide to the New Workplace

If you click hardcover you'll see they're the same book.
