Excuse for early retirement
« on: March 26, 2020, 12:19:10 AM »
When asked by the cubicle warriors on why you retired early, what do you say? Somehow they feel in their minds that it’s unfair that we are retiring early and we are not doing our share. We all know it’s bullshit because logically and mathematically the fact that we have saved up and earned more to retire automatically means we have done our share to the society. It’s just we accelerated the time scale. Anyhow.... to avoid arguing with idiots who would never understand this, what excuse do you use ?usps tracking showbox speed test

There are several threads about this. The answer is often that we don't say that we retire. Taking a sabbatical is a good excuse. Sabbaticals can take a long time, so maybe they won't notice.

Maybe I just had a great group of friends and colleagues, but I never had a negative comment.  Some expressed surprise that I voluntarily retired at the top of my game.  Many were envious, and a few asked if I worried about being bored, but they were all supportive.  If your colleagues aren't supportive, why waste time and effort caring what they think?

Do you need an excuse for living a decent human's life instead of a wage slave life?

Congratulate them on being happy having a 9-5 day. Say that you simply can't be that dedicated and that you, with deeply felt respect to them, accept your inability.

I told them it was because I could.  Why waste life at work.

Why do there opinions matter? There will be those who are happy for you and those that wont for various reasons. But, if it is something that matters to you then as @Linea_Norway said , say your burnt out and taking a sabbatical or you could say some other things have come up in your life so your you going to take some time off to think about it. There is always a creative way but personally I believe in just saying the truth once in this instants and then letting things be as they may.

I actually took alot of heat because the project I was on was behind when I left.  One person lectured me about it being wrong to accept ACA subsidies for my health insurance since I had assets.

Thing is I had real health issues from a car accident 3 years ago and really struggled to make things successful and work the hours required of me - and the company leadership were the ones that put our project in trouble by ignoring all of our recommendations and plans.  My retirement was more about quality of life and adjusting to my new health situation - I likely would have kept working otherwise.  I never disliked my work until I wasn't able to physically or mentally meet the demands which only started after my car accident.
