Economics Explained
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:14:10 AM »
Hi,

I see this book recommended on the MMM pages but unfortunately NY Public Library only has a copy to read in the library, not for loan.

Does anyone know a good (possibly more up to date?) equivalent introduction to Economics that might be more readily available?

Cheers!
Scott

Why not read it there.  It's nice and quiet.  Bring some earphones if you want noise.

Economics is a broad and changing subject.  College has two basic economics classes that are the bread and butter.  Macro and micro economics. They cover the classic theory.  You should read on both.  Another topic is money and Banking.  definitely Important if you want to use it to understand investing and the banking system.

The new field of economics that has gained traction is the behavioral economics.  That to me is the most interesting because it's actually considering that the classic economics models are wrong...especially when it comes to bubbles.

BTW, on itunesU there are several lectures on economics....Very fun....and free.

Also, see Kahn Academy for some of his short lectures on economics.  The guy is long winded but does a great job explaining specific topics.

Hey Rich, thanks, those are some good points.  I hadn't considered iTunesU.  I've listened through a lot of the Khan Academy stuff on Investing and you're right, they are a little long winded but ultimately interesting and very useful.

I like to read on the Subway and before bed, which is why I would like a copy of the book to take out of the library.  I'll google around for some general macro/micro economics literature and find out what's recommended.  I'll also take a dive in to iTunesU and see what comes up.  Thanks again for the advice!
