What are some of the dreams you have about one-time changes to your current life? These can be changes by you, by the government, etc.

I'll go first

I sometimes dream that Obama passed a law that would let everyone backfill their 401ks to the max for however long they had worked and that people can do it one time in their lives. I started in 2009 but didn't max out my 401k since I didn't know its importance. But now, I'd scrimp and save every penny I can if it meant I can put it into my 401k to hit the max limit since 2009.

I dream that someone will pass a law that lets me opt out of social security.  I would completely give up any and all claim I have to any payment in the future, and I would even let them keep the contributions I have already made.

Seconded on the backfill. It would be nice to be able to backfill 401k contributions for the years when one's employer didn't offer one. Or in the very least your prior IRA contributions not maxed earlier. I was scrimping to put a couple grand a year into a Roth (when I started mine I qualified for the savers' credit). I am doing better now, have a 401k with a match and I manage to max out my Roth now (but nowhere near maxing the 401k).

This year I might be doing significantly better- it would be nice to backfill for the years I was working for peanuts (or unemployed/underemployed). Note that with a Roth at least, the government wouldn't suddenly forgo a bunch of projected short term tax revenues...

I used to have this dream when I was your age.  But now I'm too invested in the SS system to give up the promised benefits.

Too many people would opt out for the extra cash and not have anything else to fall back on.  But I would also do it if I could.
