Double sided laser printer/scanner combo you recommend?
« on: October 13, 2024, 06:14:07 PM »
Good evening all. Can you recommend a wireless laser printer/scanner combo that does double sided scanning & printing? One that is durable and will last. Thank you

Look at the Brother brand. As far as I know, everything they make is pretty solid and they also don't do a lot of the shitty stuff that other brands do.

I think mine does all that, though I don't have the drivers installed for doublesiding. And I am not smart enough to figure out how to scan to the computer, but the copy part works great. However, mine is several years old at least so the model is not helpful to you. It was one of the smaller/cheaper ones.

Look at the Brother brand.

I've started to hear grumblings about modern Brothers, like finally locking out third party toner trays... but yes. QFT. Brother's the least crappy maker on the market still.

What you'll want to look for is a B&W toner MFC model with duplex capability:
MFC-L2900DW, MFC-L2820DWXL, MFC-L2750DW

...unless you just absolutely need color. Then get an extra fancypants CMYK color toner model:
MFC-L3720CDW, MFC-L3780CDW, MFC-L8610CDW

...and be sure to turn on toner saver in the print drivers for default printing.

(Sorry, the URLs from Brother's website seem to break BBCode URL linking due to all the brackets. So, I just named the three cheapest models of each type that are shown as new in stock with prices.)

I don't know about durability as our printers don't get a lot of use, but I recently bought an HP MFP4302FDW which is brilliant in comparison with the older printers that I've used. It was dirt cheap too.

Of course you have to avoid all the HP cruft that they try and make you install!

We have a beast of a Brother color laser printer (used off Craigslist) and use the iPhone notes tool for occasional doc scanning which is fine unless you are scanning many documents on a frequent basis.

I had decent luck with a Brother printer/scanner several years ago. I can't remember exactly why I replaced it, but I'm pretty sure it was frustration with the software/connection to my computers, not the printer itself.

I now have an HP. I print so little these days that the ink dries up before I can use it. In my opinion, that ink dries crazy fast...like in a handful of weeks. In that amount of time, I might have printed 3 to 5 pages. So all that ink would go to waste, and that $#!% ain't cheap!

I've decided to no longer use the printer part of this HP printer/scanner. On the relatively rare occasion I need to print something, I'll go to the UPS store (if it's not too personal, because they don't have self-service machines) or to OfficeMax (for the personal stuff, where I can use a self-service printer). So now, I'm spending maybe $5 every few months on printing versus $75+ on ink that dries up.

And that is why everyone hates HP. The ink dries up right away; if you're out of a color then it won't print at all, even if it's just b&w; can't use off brand ink; etc. HP used to be really good. 30 years ago.

Again, as already stated above by Sibley. However, I will add, that if you absolutely just insist on doing color inkjet printers, buy a Canon Megatank or Epson Ecotank inkjet printer with re-loadable ink wells instead of any inkjet printer from any manufacturer that uses proprietary ink cartridges.

The OP asked for a recommendation for a laser printer - they don't have ink and it doesn't dry up.

Context matters, dude - also note I was the guy who posted specific Brother laser printer models earlier on. Miss Piggy brought up inkjet. Sibley explained why the HP inkjet stunk. I just elaborated on if one must bother with inkjet at all, to go with refillable inkwell models from two less terrible printer companies.

New to the forum? Staying exactly on topic basically never happens.

We love our Brother printer. The ability to scan, print, do double-sided printing & scanning, all wirelessly is fabulous. It is so nice to have real “office” functionality at home.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
