Don't spend thousands on a new mattress - try this!!!
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:06:49 PM »
Just a friendly FYI - we had been looking for a new mattress after our 11 year old king sized pillow top starting sagging in the middle and was beyond repair (clean but killing our backs). We had looked everywhere, pricing pillow tops to 2K, memory foams to 5K and even a blow up air bed until we could find a deal on something.

We were looking online and stumbled on Amazon and found a 10" king sized memory foam mattress (Lucid brand) for $349 shipped free to the house in two days with no sales tax to boot! Now we were skeptical on buying a mattress sight unseen or tested (as anyone would), but they do have a no questions asked return policy so we gave it a shot. It arrived on the second day in a box @ 18"x18"x96". We opened up the multiple layers of packaging, unrolled it and let it "poof" up overnight and the next day it was exactly as described, a full 10" and firm - no comments! :)

After having it for a month I will say this is the best mattress we have ever had. Not one issue with the mattress quality, no issues with heat, semi soft but supportive and it comes with a twenty year warranty. Best of all we saved at least $1700 - $1800 off the cheapest quality mattress we had looked at in person and @ $4500 off a Tempurpedic brand after delivery and taxes. I would definitely suggest this brand but there are others on Amazon with excellent reviews also. Good luck!

Ahhhhh the good ole mattress business, an exceedingly high markup industry. Great to see you kept your spending low.

I so needed this post, Southern Stashian! We are needing to replace ALL of the mattresses in our house and so did not want to spend thousands of bucks doing so. We need a queen and two fulls. This will save us a boatload of cash. Thanks!

Some of the Amazon reviews on that mattress say that it wears out in a few months. I would be a little wary.

We're going 6 years strong on our Costco fake tempurpedic. I think they run about $400 shipped. The only drawback about the foam mattresses is that while they are super excellent for sleeping, they are not so great for the sexy times.

That to me is just another excuse to be creative.

You can also get just the 4" memory foam that they market as a topper, but at least for me it's been plenty thick enough to sleep on.  It's cheaper, and you also don't sink in nearly as much so it's much better for sexy times.

I have a +/-$500 temurpedic knockoff from Sam's club (delivered to my house). It rules. Sleepy time is great. No complaints about sexy times on this mattress... in fact, my boyfriend wants to get one for his bed.

The things you learn.  I mean, thousands of dollars for a mattress?  Sure makes me glad I've always preferred a waterbed.  Replaced the matress a year or two ago (after decades) for a couple of hundred or so.

I love how there are now advertisements for mattresses at the bottom of this page.

I'm glad I could help a fellow Stachien! I'm thinking you could pick up all three 10" mattresses for less than $700 or so delivered to your door and no tax (here in FL at least), maybe a lot less if you wanted an 8" mattress instead of a 10". I was almost going to pull the trigger on the 8" for @ $229 at the time (queen) but decided on the larger mattress for another $120. So far the quality has been perfect and it has become more comfortable as the weeks have gone by. Let me know what you ended up with and how much. Good luck!

Ikea has a good memory foam knock off, too. We got a queen for $349 three-ish years ago and it looks like it'll last just about forever.

That's a great deal! I hope you get a lot of years out of it. :)
We replaced our queen sized, plush topped Simmon's Beautyrest this Spring. We bought it in 2000 and paid $800 for it and the boxspring at a local discount store. We loved it so much over the years that we wanted another Beautyrest, only a king, when we replaced it. I shopped for over a year for a great deal. Ended up buying from Sears during the President's Day weekend sale for less than 1/3 of the regular price. We didn't need a boxspring because we had been gifted a platform bed frame. Spent $450 w/tx and delivery. It's as awesome as our last Beautyrest. So you can get a good innerspring, pillowtop/plush mattress for cheap, you just may have to wait a while like I did.
Besides personally detesting the feel and odor of foam, I'm a skeptic with the longevity of all-foam mattresses. It's been my experience with foam in camping mattresses, a foam mattress I had as a child, foam futon mattresses, fancy foam hotel mattresses and good quality couch cushions, that foam wears in and becomes unsupportive very quickly. Inner springs can extend the life many more years than foam alone and that's why we went that route again.
The production and disposal of foam products is also a huge concern since most are made with petroleum and many chemicals and do not biodegrade, although with a little effort and sometimes a fee on the part of the consumer, a used foam mattress can be recycled. Our last innerspring mattress and boxspring was recycled and our new mattress will also eventually be recycled as well.
Mostly these days I feel like a really old person. Nearly everyone I know has replaced their classic inner-spring mattresses with all-foam types. There just isn't enough research data on the safety of foam or enough transparency on the part of the manufacturers to make me feel safe buying it.

My $300 Walmart.com 8" foam is just now needing replacement after 5 years. $60/year for non-squeaky mattress where I can't feel the gf flopping around is great. Platform bed is a must for foam. Thanks for the tip, I love Amazon but hadn't thought of checking there for some reason.

Most mattresses are scandalously overpriced. I've had to replace my cheap (less than 100 USD) mattresses made by local manufacturers maybe twice in my 23 years of existence, and I've never had any serious back pain or sleeping issues.

To all those still looking for that "unicorn mattress" (cheap, comfortable, durable), don't worry, they're easier to find than you think!

I've never to buy a bed mattress in my life. I've inherited a bed frame at the age of 0* and I always managed to find free, really nice expensive mattresses to use.

*My Grandfather bought it used before he was married. My father was conceived on it. I was conceived on it. Talk about family history.

When my old mattress was thoroughly dead (as in - there was no longer any spot you could lie and not feel at least one spring) I took temperpedic up on their offer of a 4 month in home trial, loved it, returned it, payed nothing.

Then I bought two generic extra thick memory foam toppers, about $100 each I believe, and stacked one on top of the other.  One is a little more dense than the temperpedic, the other is a little less dense, so I can change the feel based on which one is on top.
OMG, it is more comfortable than the Brand name.  I can't believe anyone still sleeps on steel springs now that vicso-elastic memory foam exists.
Haven't found any sex related problems what-so-ever (though granted, we have a total weight of about $260, so it may be different for others? then again, I had the same mattress when I was single and dating, and oh boy that was an adventure......)

As for longevity, its been about 8 or 9 years so far, and it hasn't degraded at all yet.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
