Does changing the credit card reset credit age?
« on: August 26, 2020, 06:00:38 PM »
I have a Capitol One Savor credit card for like 18 months now.  I called them at 13 months and asked them if they'd waive the annual fee and they did.  I don't want to have to keep claling them every year to do this and wondering if they change credit cards for me will it reset the credit age ?  Part of my problem with credit is the credit age.. only like 4 years 9 months on average right now.   My score is around 809 .

Normally no, the age does not reset with a product downgrade to a no-fee card.  I've done it a bunch of times with many issuers, Barclays among them, and it has never happened to me.

Verify with Cap One, but typically a product change does not affect the account age. I've done it with no issue with Citi and Chase.

Why would you care about your average age of accounts when your score is >800?

Depending on what scoring model is being used, the number itself can vary enormously. Having longer account ages is almost always beneficial.

Why are you worried about credit age when you already have exceptional credit? It won't affect your score that much.

Ask them if the cc number will change.  If no change  it won't IME  reset the age.  But if the cc number changes then it likely will.  The expiration date and that other funny 3 digit number can change - just not the actual cc number.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
