Does anyone even drink pop/soda anymore?
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:17:16 PM »
Okay, some people just don't like the taste of plain water.  Just wondering tho why anyone would purchase and consume anything like this.  For so many reasons.  Looking for comments & opinions, that's all.

I just took a swig of Coca Cola before typing this, so yes, I'd say I drink soda still. I love the fizzy sweet taste. I mostly drink teas, water, lemonade, etc. but it's nice to break it up every once in a while with a little carbonation. :)

It's the taste and the carbonation. I'm at least at the point where I don't buy it at home anymore, but I haven't had the willpower to give it up completely. Not gonna lie...I love it.

I thought it was just me, but maybe not. I just don't seem to like soda pop anymore. I always drank diet, because I preferred it--found regular soda to be too icky-sweet. Regular soda made me thirsty. But I always found the diet sodas to be refreshing--and now I can't stand them. I prefer just to drink water, or possibly a little lemonade or unsweetened iced tea in the summer. I regularly drink coffee, milk, and wine. Did sodas change? Or are we as a people just having a sea change in our tastes?

Vital . . . love Coke er . . . loved Coke.  Only drink pop when I'm sick now tho.  Kinda wish I still liked it but once every coupla a years when I get a craving I am so dissapointed.  Can't even swallow it without the bubbles coming out the nose.  Weird.

I've had less than a dozen servings of pop/soda in my life.  I think I've paid for maybe two or three.  I don't really understand the appeal either.

I drink water every day, occasionally milk, once in a while fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a nice bottle of home-brewed kombucha around twice a week.

I'll occasionally buy some Diet Dr. Pepper when it's on sale but extremely rarely.

I will admit though that on a super hot summer day there is nothing quite like slamming an ice cold coke.  Again though that is maybe 2 or 3 times a year

I quit drinking pop probably 20 years ago (I'm old) as I wanted to lose weight.  And it sure worked.
Was totally addicted to "Tab" in the 70's. That sure didn't work for weight maintenance or loss.

I wonder lizzzi - good point there - I wonder if they've changed the formula somehow?

That's one of the greatest soft drinks ever, only because of its role in the "Pepsi Free" joke in Back to the Future.

I definitely do, although I've been working to cut back a bit.   I simply like the taste, and prefer it to coffee as an occasional caffeine boost.

Water, milk, beer, and the occasional hot chocolate . . . but no, soft drinks don't do anything for me.

Yup. I drink two sodas a day average. Coke zero or diet mt dew, but I'll drink pepsi if it is on sale. Would love to kick the habit eventually, but I really love the taste of soda and the caffiene helps get me through the day. And I can't stand coffee unfortunately.

When I breastfed my child, I stopped drinking any bubbles. And now I love cold water with lots of ice.
So we never did have any soda, just lemonade. My son (9) doesn't even like drinks with bubbles like cola or sprite, and people think this is strange, but I'm happy!

Silly experience and off topic I suppose.  But I'll never forget this one.  Working as a waitress, a family of 4 came in (parents and 2 little boys).  2 little boys ordered "Root Beer Sodas" for their beverage.  Asked parents if they wanted little boys beverage served with their dinner, before dinner or after.  Parents said that before dinner was fine.

Boys were so delighted when I brought out what "Sodas" meant to me. Tall glass filled with vanilla ice cream, Root Beer, whipped cream with a cherry on top.

Being from Chicago, this is what a "Soda" meant to me.

I admit, I do drink soda.  Too much of it.  I have tried many times to give it up, but always end up going back.  There are so many reasons not to drink it, but I just plain like it.  We just started a Biggest Loser thing at work, though, and my goal is to go the whole 12 weeks without it.  Well, except the week I am on vacation and I will splurge once or twice.

I used to drink crazy amounts of the stuff and not even diet. I still do occasionally, but in much reduced amounts. About the same in a week what I used to drink every day. Progress!!!

DH and I used to drink diet soda each everyday.   It was expensive and not good for us, so we quit completely about two years ago, I've just gone to all water and DH replaced the one he had at dinner with homemade iced coffee.

We will now drink soda when we got out to eat (about once a month) or at parties, but don't buy it at home.   I like it less and less each time I have one.   I also have lost the taste for diet (used to prefer it), and when I do have one out get regular.

I also think that quitting was much easier since we were doing it after DH quit his job and I semi-retired.   It would have been much harder to do while both working FT crazy hours (getting less sleep, needing more of something to get us through the day).   Just another example of the broad effects that moving towards leaving the rat race can have.

I used to be a raging soda addict in my teens and twenties but as I've aged I have just gradually given it up because it just tastes too sweet now.  I would rather drink an unsweetened iced tea or coffee.  I do drink one once in awhile - but very rarely now.

I just drank a classic coke (free, courtesy of my office). I would say I drink one a week at most, more like one every other week. I don't drink diet drinks or anything with artificial sweeteners. That stuff makes me want to curl up into the fetal position and die.

I love coke, but I drink it only occasionally. I prefer real coke - never been a big fan of the aspartame off-taste. But I never, ever keep it at home. I mostly stick to water, fruit juice, unsweetened tea, and coffee with milk.

I don't understand how this became an everyday drink for anyone...we had it at parties when I was a kid...and eventually all 3 of us kids started to prefer juice, iced tea, or mineral water. Now at parties I have...other beverages, but I might get a soda with pizza or a burger when I go out, or at "free lunch" university group events. Oh, and on flights. I love sprite or ginger ale on the plane :)

I've even weaned myself off most juice to just water, iced tea, and alcoholic beverages in the past 4 years. But nothing is expressly forbidden.

I drink more soda than I'd like.  However, I notice I go in streaks.  If I abstain from it for one day, it's easier for me to do it the next day, then the next, then the next, etc.  I challenge myself to continue my 'streak' of days of not drinking soda.  However, when I give in and have a soda, I lose that motivation I had during my streak and I find myself having a few consecutive days where I have one or two each day.

I just have to stay focused on cutting it out completely but I do have that slip up once in awhile.

I used to drink diet soda but have since found by isolation that the aspartame in them gave me headaches.

Between a choice of beverages containing >100 calories per serving I would choose beer or wine any time. Since then, I don't drink it anymore.

I never liked the taste of regular sodas even when I was a kid, but I sometime (once every couple of years whenever I am back in the old italian neighbourhood to visit my parents in Montreal) I go for a Brio Chinotto or an Italian soda -especially mint and limoncello.

I do find the bubbles makes water more appealing to me, so I started drinking unsweetened flavored sparkling water many years ago and it helps me keep hydrated. But yes, I do find that even diet sodas taste too sweet now. For a once in awhile treat, I like the "Dry" brand of sodas (places like Whole Foods carry it). That only has about 60 calories per soda and is not very sweet at all.

My husband used to drink 6 to 8 2L bottles of Diet Coke per week. He's down to 2. I'm so glad. It was killing our grocery budget, and it can't be good for his health.

We never have anything but Diet Coke in the house. I like Diet Coke when I eat out, but don't drink it at home, and I'm trying to eliminate it entirely. I really like seltzer/club soda with a splash of fruit juice instead. Only one of our three kids likes any kind of soda at all.

The occasional ginger beer (sometimes diet)  or small soda with a Sub (usually more ice than soda).

If I'm drinking whiskey I will usually have it with ginger beer.

Ginger ale is what I drink mostly ... but even then it is a very occasional thing ... maybe once or twice a month... Ice cold Coke regular was a staple back in the day but now I find that it tastes "funny" so I stick with Ginger ale, water, red wine, occasional beer, or water with lemon...

Anything with Aspertame gives me migraines so I stay far away from any diet drinks ...

I used to drink a crap load of mountain dew... stepped on a scale one day and it said 260 (I'm 6'6" so I didn't look like a rolly polly) but damn..... cut pop out completely for a couple years and lost 60 lbs.(disclaimer I changed a lot of other habits as well) I'll have a twelve ounce can ever now and again but any more than that gives me an upset stomach. I really don't even care for it with my whiskey anymore.  Just drink it neat or on the rocks

I too am not a coffee drinker and would have sodas for the caffeine.  I used to drink Diet Dr. Pepper and some other diet sodas as well.  However, there was a time a few years back that we ran out and I didn't really have a chance to get to the store to buy any for a few days.  After suffering through the caffeine withdrawal headaches, I vowed to stay off caffeine.  Bought some caffeine-free diet stuff and realized how dumb it seemed and stopped buying soda after that.  Since I don't smoke or drink and avoid caffeine, I've been accused of being a Mormon!  LOL.

Soda is a complete waste of money.  It adds zero value to a persons life.

I gave it up when I was 15 because I'm smart.

Yep.

I used to drink it a lot more than I do now, but still have coke probably about 1-2 times per week. Usually with a meal.  I also tend to drink Vitamin Water, which I'm fairly certain is as bad for you as coke.

I feel like i'll go a solid 2-3 days only drinking water, then binge on the crap for a day or two, then go 2-3 days only drinking water.  Rinse and Repeat.

We had 35 people over at our house yesterday for Memorial Day: about 15 adults and 20 kids (age 1 to max of about 12).  No one brought or asked for soda.  Lots of water, some sweet tea, and very little juice.  My wife put about 80 bottled waters in a cooler with ice and when the last person left we had 2 waters left.

I think most of us realize soda is bad for teeth and behavior (my kids go nuts whenever they are allowed soda, say at a friend's house).  And most of us are cheap enough we don't like to buy it either.

Ooh . . . Actually, I forgot one.  Ginger beer is stunningly awesome.  Ginger beer (with a strong ginger kick) and rum in a glass with some ice and lime is pretty much the greatest summer weather drink ever invented.

Yet you buy bottled water that you could get almost free from the tap?

I am proud to say that I have never purchased bottled water except for that which came in a 6 gallon jug that I reuse in case of emergency.

Depends on the season. In the winter I may have a small bottle of it once every few weeks, if that. In the summer I might have three or four cans a week.

I feel the same way, Emily. I try to treat sodas at parties or events like a rare treat because I don't buy them, but I just end up not even wanting to finish them.

I have made homemade ginger ale recently, though, and that was a fun enough experiment to warrant making it again in the future. It's much less sugary, though.

I need something to put in my rum (Coke).  That is a summer drink for me, I have a 3/4 full bottle of Cola in my fridge that I started last August.  I suppose I should ditch it and get a new one for this summer.  Of course that means I think summer might actually come - the way this spring is going, I am not so sure any more.

I know - it went from 27 to 18 while I was driving home from Ottawa on Monday (thunderstorms will do that).  Yesterday the high here was 13.  Right now it is 11.  Low 20's forecast for the weekend, and that is JUNE!  If we are in perpetual spring, that is OK, I just need to warn my tomatoes.

I splurged on a bottle of WildVines at the LCBO, but I need hot weather to drink it.  I don't want it to sit unopened in the fridge  ;-(

Ah, c'mon.  We've just had two days close to 30!

Love my diet coke and root beer, in moderation - one bottle a week (the small one, not a 2L), plus at social events if I want it. Why? Because it's delicious :)

I, for one, wonder why people drink alcohol, given that it's horrendously expensive, has some pretty negative health effects, and tastes like crap.

I used to drink lots and lots of soda, but at this point I've switched to lots and lots of sweet tea instead. (What can I say? I was born and raised in Atlanta; Coca-Cola and sweet tea is what we drink here...) My wife nags me that I ought to drink plain water instead of going through a gallon of tea every day or so.

I've switched the sweet tea to a sugar-stevia blend (all-stevia gives a funny aftertaste), and I'm working on gradually reducing the sweetness...
