Does anybody here have experience with home exchange?
« on: September 08, 2016, 09:28:05 AM »
Hi there!

I discovered MMM a few months ago and I am practicing Mustachianism since then, all be it with some adaptation to the Dutch possibilities and tax law (we already got a thing for bikes here, yay!). My boyfriend and I however do like to see the world, especially now that we didn't start a family yet. Got me thinking about traveling Mustachian-style. Somehow I came up with the idea of house exchanging and searched some information on the internet. We own a nice house half an hour travelling from Amsterdam, so I think people might actually be interested in staying here and in exchange we can stay in their place for free and only have to pay for our transport to get there. Seems like a great Mustachian deal!

My boyfriend only has one understandable objection to this plan, and that is that he doesn't want anyone to sleep (and do other adult stuff, if you know what I mean) in our bed. I agree with him. This year we already got some renovation plan for our house, for we will build another floor on our house by raising our roof, so there will be an unused guest/bedroom. We could build a lock on our own bedroom door and 'force' our guest to sleep in the bedroom we don't use.

Plans to do this and start discovering the fascinating world of house exchanging are getting more and more serious and since I can't imagine I am the first Mustachian with this idea: does anybody here have any experience with house exchanging? (And would you be interested to stay for free in the middle of Holland! ;-) )

I've been looking into this as well.  A couple friends here in Seattle have done this a half dozen times and just love it.  It all worked out well.  They have been to Spain, Italy, and France.  There are a number of good websites for this.

They use this site:  https://www.homeexchange.com/en/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=vacation%20home%20swaps&utm_campaign=HE%20USA%20-%20Home%20Exchange&mkwid=nl0bxD7b%7Cdc&pcrid=3061363729

It's as efficient as Air B&B these days.   As far as folks sleeping in your bed - I don't see the big deal.  You'll change the sheets and they'll change the sheets in their house.

I love home exchanges.  Have traded my Toronto home with San Francisco, Victoria, Ottawa, and Florida.    Putting a lock on your bedroom is a very "un-home exchange" kind of thing to do. Generally, I find the people very open and welcoming.  Just change your sheets.  You will be sleeping in their bed, no?
