I've decided to look for a financial advisor who specializes in giving advice to American expats in Italy (where I live). Unfortunately, there are lots of tax and FBAR implications to investing outside the US for US citizens and the whole thing is confusing.  Also, there are lots of tax things that I need to think about.  I've heard of a couple of fee only advisors who can do this where I live.

Unfortunately I have one of those managed accounts where I pay 1%.  Even more unfortunate for me is that he is a friend.  Otherwise, I'd probably transfer everything to Vanguard or Fidelity.

It's sad that you have to buy a friend. Try to get out more, get into an activity group of some kind.
