Do you eat the "ends" of a loaf of bread? Just a fun one...
« on: August 21, 2019, 12:04:06 PM »
Asking because in our household, I am the only one who will eat the loaf ends of store-bought bread loaves. SO won't and neither will the 3 kids...it's my superpower I guess

To me, they eat just like any other piece of bread. What am I missing? They are still good for sandwiches, with peanut butter, etc.

Also, surprisingly, there is a Hot Debate about what people around the world call the loaf ends...some of my favorites: doorstep(?!), bumper, healie, bum.

I don't but SO does. They're just too..tough.

Related question: Do you eat the leafy ends of carrots? In moderation, they work well in a salad. Or they can be sautéed.

Yes, but I save them until the end because I don't really like them. If they're particularly small sometimes I'll feed them to my chickens.

I don't eat carrot tops - I tried them and don't like them, nor does my family.

We call them the 'heels' of the bread, and yes, we eat them.  On a proper loaf of bread, they're the best part!  I do agree that on low quality bread they are pretty bad, but that's why we only buy from the bakery section (when I'm not able to bake it myself) and not from the shelf.

If you don't like them, perhaps use them for croutons, or Tuscan Bread Soup, or bread crumbs?

I'm pretty sure there is a brewing company that uses bread ends as an ingredient for brewing. Can't recall where I read/saw that, though...

Not on a sandwich. Generally, it would get tossed in the oven and then used for spreading cheese, tamponade, etc. So basically treated more like a cracker than bread, I guess.

The ends are my favorite, but I'm the only one in our household that will eat them.  My SO and kids won't.  I usually wait to eat the front end slice, because it acts as a buffer to keep the middle slices from getting stale.

My son does love the end piece of a baguette or french bread however.

I eat them. It's not a big deal to me. I often keep the first one as I go through the loaf and then pair it with the last one at the end. I'll make a sandwich or pbj.

I also agree on the term 'heel', I'd almost forgotten that, but that's what I'd always thought them to be called :)

No. I prefer the middle and usually skip the first and last couple slices, leave them there til the end of the loaf. I do hate tossing them, I have used them for a meatloaf in the past.

Part of how I lost weight was being more picky. The middle is more moist and the same size, makes a better sandwich to me.

Ditto.  My kids won't eat the ends because . . . I actually have no idea.  But we use them as freshness buffers, and my husband and I end up eating them.  They're fine!  They're perfectly good, and they're food.  We don't waste food.

As to what they're called -- ends, I guess?  I think I've said heel as well.  My dad calls them something that sounds like "toot-sull"-- language of origin unclear.

For some reason my sister and I call them bread butts.  No idea where it came from.

I eat them as toast, but I avoid them for sandwiches.  My toddler is averse to crust generally, so I try to not give them to him for any purpose.

I call them bread butts too and they are delicious warmed up with just a smear of Apple or Honey Butter.

I would truly eat a whole bag (loaf?) of them, given the chance.

The ends of a fresh baguette or other rounded loaf are the best part.  They are my favorite.
The ends of a store bought mass produced loaf are kind of disgusting and my DH is the only one who will eat them.  And even he will often just toss them.

The butt end of the bread is my preferred term, for reasons unknown.

Store bought bread is a no.  Homemade bread is a yes.  Especially if it's warm out of the oven with butter and homemade raspberry jam.

As a kid we called then “heels” and fed them to the ducks at the local pond. Now my husband and I call them “butts” and have an endless friendly argument over them. I don’t want to eat the butts and he thinks not eating then is a waste. He has no problem with a “double butt sandwich” and will sometimes try to con me into one. ;-)

My daughter likes the heels of the bread, and I don't mind if one half of my sandwich is the heel.

My son eats whole apples, core and all. It's a little disconcerting.

I have always heard them called "heels" as well, never knew there was a debate. My philosophy is that I paid for it so I'm eating it. Both my wife and I have no problem using the heels whenever they come up. Though we try to split them between us so that no one gets two heels when we transition from one loaf to another.

When I was in college sharing a co-op house with many other people I only ate the first heel if it was a brand new loaf. Too gross after everyone else brushed it aside to grab the slices in the middle... I believe our house cook would occasionally make croutons out of the heels to keep them from going to waste.

I eat the heels because I don't mind them. If make a sandwich with the crust part of the heel turned inside, my kids usually won't even notice.

Once I bought something called "sandwich thins," and they tasted just like the heels from a loaf of cheap bread, but they were much more expensive.

I always eat them, bread is bread. I have someone in my family who absolutely loves them, I'm neutral personally. In my language they are always called butt - little butt to be precise.

Depends on the type of bread but if I don't want to eat the ends I save them up in the freezer and turn them into bread crumbs when I have several.

Ends of the bread - Yes. it makes very good toast! The concave shape lends itself to the retention of jams or cheese. Science. Believe.

Haha, I do this too. Two reasons: no need to find a trash can and the confused look on people's faces when they realize you just took the last bite of your apple.

And you only get the poison if you chew the seeds, otherwise they pass right through. More importantly, you're right, it takes way more than what's in a seed to hurt you.

If it's good bread, then yes, no problem. For flimsy sandwich bread, only as a last resort.

I like the crusty bits. Those are the best bits. I like it when you get a super thin slice of part of the end, and then ANOTHER slice that's also mostly crust. That's like a bonus crusty bit.

I've always called them "end breads", and they are the BEST, I will fight for them. Me and my sister actually used to fight over end breads growing up. My boyfriend doesn't like them, so they've been ALL MINE for many years now.

Heels make the best toast.  I leave them on store-bought soft breads to keep the middle soft as long as possible (I also usually skip the first two inside slices because they tend to be drier, unless I'm making toast).

For crusty breads, and fresh out-of-the-oven bread, the heel is the best part.

I also eat them, but it depends on the size. Slightly small ones make the best super-crunchy toast. Nearly normal-sized, I use to make a sandwich.

If they've been cut too small for anything decent, I will tear them up and toss them in the freezer bag. It's handy to have a bag full of torn up bread for meatloaf, meatballs, gazpacho, etc. I do not let them go to waste. As was said up thread, they're food and we don't waste food.
