Hello,
I was a bank branch manager for sometime... Not sure what bank you're with, but this may apply.
1. Ask how to get free checks? With many banks, all you need is a qualifying direct deposit, or your employer may have some agreement with their bank that gives employees better banking benefits.
2. In addition to #1, there are often checking accounts that provide free checks if you have $XX balance. Often around 1000-2000 balance. You can upgrade to this 'premium' bank account and downgrade in a month. This would get you your checks.
3. Online bill pay does send physical checks if there is no electronic payment available. To test, just send an e-check to yourself at your address. I used to pay my rent for years this way. My landlord would receive the check in the mail.
4. If you only ever need just 1 check, your local branch CAN print out checks. Depending on your checking account plan, history with the bank, they may be free or may waive the charge. It's about 1.50 per check they print, but is OFTEN waived.
5. Do you have investments? Most brokerage accounts provide checks - e trade did to me without me even asking. Free too. If you only ever need a check a few times a year, do a transfer to your brokerage and write that check out.
I personally do use checks because many local services in my small town do not take plastic.
