Discount Phone and data plans in Canada?
« on: March 13, 2015, 12:03:11 PM »
Do any Canadian's have any recommendations on this?  I have a iphone that someone gave me, but I can't find a plan for less than 50 bucks a month which seems crazy to me for the limited amount I will us it.

I personally have a Rogers pre-paid plan (pay as you go) for $10 a month. This gives you $10 a month to spend on calls, texts, and data. Calls are 40 c/min, texts are 25c each (both incoming and outgoing), and data is $1/day (10mb cap, you can spend another buck if you need another 10 mb). I rarely ever talk on the phone, I occasionally text, and I buy data once in a while (most of the time I'm on wifi so I don't need the data very much). I tend to build up a big balance because I use less than the full $10 a month, and it rolls over if you top up before it expires (you can set up an auto top-up plan on their website so it will just charge your cc once a month, and you don't need to remember).

Another option I have been looking at is Koodo. They have a plan where you pay $15 a month to have the service, that includes unlimited texts, and then you can buy packages for voice/data. The packages last until you spend them down. So you can get 500 minutes for $25, and 1gb of data for $30. For me this would be more expensive, but if you were a heavier user then it might be cheaper.

If you are an even heavier user, and you live in a city where Wind Mobile is available, they have an everything-unlimited plan for $35/month.

How about getting just a basic calling plan, and using wifi networks instead of paid data?

It's not extensive, and it varies from province to province based on your needs, but here's a basic list of Canadian MVNOs to sort through to find one that best suits your needs. The guide in general is also useful on the VoIP end as many of the recommended carriers handle Canadian customers as well.

I have an iPhone 3g which I gave to my daughter who uses it only for text message, and the occasional call, on a pay-as-you-go plan with Bell for $15.75 per month. She is not very happy to walk around with that antiquity, but hey, it's free and I'm paying for her plan, for my own peace of mind. If she wants to connect to the internet, she can always find free wifi practically everywhere in the city....If your iPhone is unlocked and you don't need data, this is perfect.

Depends on your Province and needs. Learn to love wifi, save a fortune. Right now its data that adds the most to a plan, if you have home internet its not really an issue.

Koodo  https://shop.koodomobile.com/plans/plans/index.html
Virgin http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/plans/silver.html
SaskTel http://www.sasktel.com/wps/wcm/connect/content/home/wireless/promotions/personal-wireless-promotions/promo-activate-previously-loved-device. Not the greatest deal.
Telus - $55/month for 1GB of data, unlimited talk and text (on contract). They have a share plan, nice for families.

I like the promo SaskTel is running, $10 off a plan is pretty significant, hopefully the other players do the same. I'm tired of the free phone promos, give my older awesome phone a discount instead.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into both the rogers and koodo. I don't make many calls, but do text a fair amount. I have wifi pretty much everywhere important so I don't need the data.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds like the Petro-Canada monthly Text-A-Lot Plan might be the way to go. $15/month for 100 minutes, unlimited texting and no data.

Oh if you don't use a lot of phone time but text a lot. Look into the Rogers/Fido Pre-paid yearly unlimited options. My phone plan is $100/year so like $8 and something a month and it is unlimited text and 100 minutes of talk for the year, but no data but I think there are pre-paid data options you can supplement with.

I use fongo with a tablet plan. I keep data connection closed at all times and open it just when i need it. Rest of the time I'm on wifi. Porting your number to fongo is 35$ i think. Then i got unlimited canada texts addon (9,99$ for 6 months). But you could just use whatsapp or another free text app. Tablet plan is 5$/month for first bracket, which i have yet to bust.

7-11/Speak Out might be best - any topup gives a full 365 days of air time, IIRC.

Koodo prepaid has free texting.  SMS texting, I mean.  It's about $15.00 / month.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
