Discount "Day Old" Bread Store
« on: September 21, 2015, 12:47:15 PM »
Anyone buy bread the discount "day old" store?  There is one a few blocks from the office I have never bought anything from, but I was passing by and decided to swing in.  Ended up with bread/bagels/English muffins for probably 1/2 of what they would have cost at the next lowest store, Aldi.  We go through bread items pretty fast so I figured it'd probably stay fresh long enough, but even if we lose a little to mold, we'll still be ahead.  Didn't buy too much more than what we would need for the week, but in the past I have frozen bread windfalls then toasted the bread afterwards.  Works pretty well.

My mom used to get bread from one down the street where I grew up, not sure why it has taken me so long to check it out. Used to get free "day old" bread in college, too.

I don't have a bread store near me, but I would buy everything there if I could (except for bagels - if they're not hot from the oven, I don't want them!).  My supermarket discounts bread, and right before Thanksgiving, I'm the one feeling up the baguettes looking for the stalest ones, since I need dry bread to make my stuffing.

Wish we had one of those around here, though I don't go through too much bread anyway. In college the local coffee/bagel house would set aside bags of 6 day old bagels for free starting at 9pm or so - it was always fun 'fighting' with other college kids for a bag (We were actually pretty amicable about it - two or three people would split a bag and get two or three bagels each).

I'm a firm believer that expiration dates on food are guidelines. Is it not the color it should be? Are funky smells coming out of it? Is your milk now in solid form? If you can answer yes to those questions, it's time to toss. If it's all fine, I keep eating it, regardless of the expiration date.

We used to, but we don't anymore.  Not that they were not good, they were.  There was no telling what they would have available, so every week was different.  Really enjoyed the bread/sweets.  These were the leftovers from after delivering to all the stores I think, they weren't expired yet, but just the extras, but it was like a leftover thrift store for bread.  The bakery just made too much so they had extra to sell and they were all super cheap.  Stopped buying because we started eating organic bread instead and we don't eat a lot of bread anymore also.

Used to get a great multi grain bread from the day old store.
Recently the store moved about 8 miles away, we get that
way occasionally, but I don't think I'll get my great bread like
I used to.  :-(

Haven't done this in years (mostly because I just eat very little bread now), but I read somewhere that the best way to keep bread from getting stale is to store it in the freezer, rather than on the counter, and it worked well for me. Either eat it immediately, or into the freezer it goes. Then it will stay fresh and taste great, even if you don't toast it. I used to make my PBJ sandwiches for school or work on frozen slices of bread, which thawed by lunchtime and helped keep my lunch bag cool in the process. I also freeze muffins as soon as they're cool after removing them from the oven. 30 seconds in the microwave and they're almost as good as new, and much better than the dry mess I get if I leave them on the counter for a few days, or the mush that occurs if I put them in the fridge.

Even if you don't have a discount bread store near you Jimmy John's usually sells their day old bread too.  It was my go to store for bread when I was in college.

Yes, we shop at such a store on a regular basis.  Typically we can get three loaves of sliced bread for $2.

Yes, we also buy Jimmy John's bread.  It's fifty cents for a day-old loaf, but they usually give you three loaves for $1.  The only negative:  They don't offer whole wheat bread.

We used to when we had one close. Now that I get a big loaf of Italian bread already sliced at Aldi, which freezes very well and we no longer eat bagels and sweets there is no point.

Used to all the time as a kid. We got loafs of bread, rolls, and sometimes doughnuts for pretty cheap. But we don't eat hardly any bread products anymore and I bake what I need if we do end up wanting any (costs pennies a loaf to bake really excellent bread for me now - and I love making it too) so haven't checked any of them out in forever.

We had one near our old house. Now it's like 7 miles away. I go there when I have some other errand in that general direction. I only have room for 4 loaves in my freezer and obviously I can't justify driving 14 miles round-trip to save $5 on bread! Love it, though. I also love having a freezer full of bread, because we use a lot and I hate trying to guess when I should buy it at the store.

My knee-jerk reaction was to hit the "report to moderator" button.  "Ma'am, did that baguette give consent?"

My dad called it the "Used Bread" store.  I love him, funny man.

The Big Lots stores in my area carry "used bread."

We have a Friehoffers outlet nearby. All Arnold brand varieties at half price. Plus, when you drive over the county line to get there, gas prices drop by 15 cents a gallon.

I don't know of one near me, but my mom would go to one when we were little. She'd buy 12-15 loaves of bread at a time and put it all into the freezer in the basement. They eventually closed though.

I've done the math and homebaked bread is $0.30 per loaf for me. Makes even the dayold stuff not worthwhile. Unfortunately, SWMBO still buys bagels and specialty breads.

I more go to the day old sections of Walmart and Shoppers Food Warehouse where I live but I have fond memories of the Wonder Bread one that used to be near my house.

This. There is a Walmart grocery store very close to my house and I have scored a very nice loaf of French bread for $.50. Only a dollar when fresh. I do not have a discount bakery nearby. But even if I did it would have to be right on my way because the small amount of money I would say that would not be worth the extra time.

Discount bread definitely gets closer to the line of where your time is worth more than your money. I do realize the math is different for different people.

My wife decided to go ahead and freeze a good bit of the bread.  On my advice, she preseparated the bagels and English muffins to make toasting them straight out of the freezer easier.

But the effort involved also counts.  Since I can save more money in other ways, this isn't something I choose to do.

Yes, I go frequently.  I can get my bread for 99 cents that is about $3 in the store.  My problem is passing up the really cheap donuts.

Yes! We love senior discount day at the bread store.  At the store near us, it's on Wednesday and Saturday.   55+ so you don't even need to be that old.   If you buy a certain amount, like $10 you get free additional items for free.    It's awesome.

I thought I posted this, but perhaps there's a parallel thread somewhere... Our family affectionately calls it the "Dead Bread" store.

I won't make bagels or croissants I admit.  And I bought a loaf of salt rising bread without looking closely at its ingredient list and saw it contained lard! Since I don't eat beef or pork or products made from them it will be donated to someone who does and I suppose I will look into making my own salt rising bread from scratch probably vegan so my son can eat it as well....

LOVE the Day Old Bread Store! I biked over on my lunch break last week and the clerk noticed my badge and bike. She says, "Oh, you work in the area?".  I said yes and she gave me a whopping handful of BOGO coupons to share at the office.   The road is under construction so not a lot of car drivers wanted coupons.  More for me!  In fact I am looking forward to a few packs of pumpkin bagels for the freezer.  They sell my fave sour dough for $2, it's $4.19 at the grocery.

I would probably get bagels there if it existed where I live, since that's the only thing I don't make! But right now we just buy a $6.50 sack of flour once a month, and that seems to keep us well covered for bread, muffins, tortillas, and baking.

I'm able to get chichi day old bread at the regular grocery store on a rack for day old bakery goods.  You might check for this at your grocery.

I already buy bread for $1/loaf at the regular grocery store, so there's no need for me to go an extra 3 miles up the road to the discount bakery where I can buy gourmet bread that's older and still costs more than $1/loaf.

Oh yes!  Love the outlet store.  On Mondays all bread is $.69 a loaf!  The rest of the week is $.89.  I stock up on 2 weeks worth at a time and freeze it until needed.  I try and hit it on Monday but if I don't make it until later in the week its still $2.10 less per loaf than the regular grocery store.  Its a "good" brand of bread as well.

If one was within walking distance, I'd check it out, but I haven't come across any in this area.

I also do nearly all of my baking. Much, much healthier and I usually enjoy it even when it gets time-consuming (rolling out tortillas, cough).

After purchasing a loaf of bread at a local farmers market I discovered it contains lard!! Since I don't eat beef, pork or products made with them I will give to a coworker.  On the upside this will motivate me to learn to make my own salt rising bread.

That's so weird, I've never even heard of putting lard in bread! Here in Canada they seem to put dairy in bread all the time, which was a headache before I just started making my own.

I bought all our bread at one that was about eight miles further out than work (so an extra drive of 16 miles counting return trip). So I bought a couple months' worth at a time and put it in the deep freezer. But the store closed a couple of years ago, and there's not another within a hundred miles. It was a factory outlet, and the commercial bakery closed, sadly.

All our bread came from a day old store when I was a kid, though more often we ate homemade cornbread or biscuits.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
