Best of luck to both of you. Hopefully the heart issue will be fully resolved and the work problem soon after.

Glad to hear your DH is safely out of surgery, Linda, and they know what's wrong.  Sorry they could not fix it this time -- bad luck on that piece -- but better to be safe in one piece, and know what's wrong I think.  My best to both of you.

Just another update.

DH is back to work FT, but in a period with lots of holidays, which we turned into long weekends. His boss and boss above aren't really doing anything to change his working situation. They are suggesting to placing his group under another boss, but otherwise continue as before, working in the low paid part of the market.
The Swedish part of the company is still working on becoming world leaders. They found out that DH's group needs to be transferred to a separate company to do this. DH's boss's boss has required that every person sends his own explicit request for this. DH made sure everyone's request contains a requirement that they will not lose seniority and benefits.
Otherwise DH's boss's boss is giving radio silence.

DH yesterday had a talk with a personal coach who is coaching all the group leaders and maybe many more. That gave him again food for thought. He is now finally realizing that he can work his as off until he ends up in hospital, and won't receive any thank you for it. In contrary, he will only be blamed for having been sick during 4 months by probably not getting the raise he was hoping for. Not that it matters in the financial way, but just as a principle.

I have told DH that FIREing a year earlier than planned is also an option for him. I think it will work out financially somehow, although we are still about 80.000 USD short of FIRE in 2020.

The coach knew about this kind of burned-out stuff and said it might take a year before you are back to normal at work. The coach also talked about his son, a famous sports person in Norway, who has a pretty similar heart issue as DH has. That sports person has been operated twice without being fixed.

The coach also suggested that DH buys a Spot device (a GPS that can send text message when you are in need). That would give DH a bit more freedom to be outside cell phone coverage without worrying too much. But we weren't worried too much about it in the first place. So we'll just think about it.

Linda_Norway ... so many red flags here!!!  DH should quit today!  The FIRE shortfall is really minimal IMHO - you both are resourceful and smart and could figure out many, many alternatives to reduce costs or get a little side income. Indeed, I would predict that once DH was home full-time you'd discover you could manage just fine on what you have.

The Spot thing might be a good idea since he does have a diagnosed medical problem.

I hope he does something self-empowering like quit his job and run his own shop at his own pace to see if he likes it.

Regardless, thanks for the update.  Good luck to both of you.  And - seriously, treasure the times you have.  You DON'T know when they will end.  It's time for you two to have and savor the good times.

So, it sounds like nothing has changed, and there is no reason to believe that it ever *will* change.  Time to start planning an exit, IMO, or at the very least just stop caring.  I think DH should show up, work reasonable hours, leave on time, and leave his work at the office.  If the bosses' expectations are not met, then they need to make the hard choices.

This is critical. Boss boss lost his face and might pull some strings or blackmail to take revenge.
DH needs to strengthen his relationship to the swedish management and be seen as untouchable key player.
Best wishes!

That is positive news. Swedes don’t normally make decisions without thorough discussions, so hopefully the boss’s boss will soon realize he has lost.

Wow, your husband has been through a lot. After the transfer if he continues to have heart issues I would take the year off paid and then disability if it is possible there.    Hope things work out.

Congrats!
The new swedish boss seems to be a good one.
DH will need to monitor his health carefully, as he will want to prove his capability.
