Using teamtreehouse to get my coding feet wet?
« on: February 20, 2016, 09:50:43 PM »
I see quite a few coding threads popping up lately and I am wondering about this teamtreehouse website that some people are suggesting.

I am pretty technology literate, anytime I go to my parent's house there is a issue with their computer that I have to tend to or even at work I am often called over to fix somebody's issue with their PC. I have a pretty high end workstation that I built from scratch so I know a little bit about the hardware end of things.
I want to learn everything I can about front and back end development but I'm not in a situation where I can go to school for something like that at the moment, and from my understanding this website is a great start and some people are saying it is much more informative than most college courses teaching similar things. I understand that having a CS degree is king but I figure if I can make some intuitive applications/games or make a few websites that I MIGHT be hired at a decent starting salary.

I have tried doing some java and python on codeacademy but I feel like I need to see progress on a level that I'm not seeing, I get about 25-30% through the course and I just hit a wall and I can't seem to grasp why I am writing the code that I am writing. I am figuring that maybe back end development is just very tedious and frustrating to learn from scratch? It seems like treehouse goes a bit further with some VERY detailed videos providing assistance and actually explaining why certain lines of code are put in these places etc.

I am wondering if anyone else on the forums has used this website or if there are better solutions out there? For $25 a month it seems like a great value. Does anyone think it is possible to soak up all the info from coding "bootcamps" and be able to land a decent job?

I'm using FreeCodeCamp.com.  You have front end and back end practice, then you spend 800 hours building up a resume and helping non profits.

Then they help you look for a job!  =D  I'm almost through all the front end stuff and the instant immersion has helped me understand a lot.

Thanks a ton I will check that website out for sure, do you actually participate in building projects with other users on the site? It seems like that would be a wonderful way to build a resume.

Did you know anything about coding previously or did you just jump right in?

I did some C++ awhile back and knew basic HTML/CSS, but not enough to have done anything with it... so it felt like jumping right in!

You work with others as you get further along.  I think specifically once you're doing the non-profit projects you work in teams of 2-3, but I can't remember where I read that.
