To those of you just starting out...

I highly recommend keeping a copy of your monthly budgets/ assets and liability sheets. I was looking last night at one of ours from back in 2010, it is really crazy how far we have come. In the future it will be pretty cool to look back and see what you accomplished with all the sacrifices you will make in the coming years.

Good luck!

I second that!

Its nice to see your assets go up (and hopefully that continues) as well as how you might of figured ways to even cut your budget more. 4-5 years of working on my Mustache and I am still finding ways to save Bucks with out giving up our quality of life. I know already for next year our budget will be quite less.

I am older than most on this board. That said, I have kept my original statement from Vanguard.(25 + years ago. And started with $12000)

To be fair, I also had an account with T. Rowe Price which let you start with $50 a month if you linked it to your checking or savings account. (This is before on-line banking/brokerage accounts.)

It is all about TIME in the markets and compound growth...Today we are FI and looking forward to being fully FIRE'd very soon.

I have mine from 2012 in MINT, but even my personal detailed sheet goes back 6 years.

I basically have a month by month journey from student loans to being worth over half a million dollars. Pretty fun to look at it.

We still have our budget spreadsheets going back 20 years - it's really cool to see how things have changed, I recommend it too!

I am just started out, all my legacy data only goes back to 2016 haha.

Can someone help me with what else I might need?

I have

  • Month by month expenditure
  • Monthly costs bar graph showing all fixed costs and variable costs
  • Monthly by month pie charts showing spend breakdown
  • Personal spends sheet, showing all misc spending like coffee - this gets smaller typically each month in theory!
  • Mortgage overpayment sheet, showing all overpayments and % paid off the mortgage

I keep yearly not monthly historical data but I have kept it all the way back to early 2000s (depending on the data). I do have breakdowns of expenses by categories, networth increases, investment increases (both contributions and market gains), roth contributions per year, income per person. All have been useful.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
