Has anyone traveled to Costa Rica recently,  whatever that means in our crazy covid days?
I'm considering going there mid May but can't seem to get a cohesive picture of how to plan my trip.
Single mid-40s female traveling alone.
Please recommend areas and activities that are not too touristy but safe. Looking to do this trip fairly low cost and I usually stay in airbnb.

Tamarindo is my favorite place to visit, although haven't been there since Covid.  Loads of AirBNB there.  It used to be a hidden gem but got a bit more traffic in recent years.  I imagine with Covid it is pretty good time to visit.  Never go during Catholic holidays or Christmas as all the locals across the country swarm the beaches.  One trip, we had a mile of beech all to ourselves, next at Christmas we were slammed among tens of thousands locals.

I have not been recently, but I have been a few times.

If you want rainforests, beautiful beaches, and not too touristy, I recommend Manzanillo. Here is a place I stayed that I really enjoyed and it wasn't too expensive:

It's at the edge of the jungle. My favorite experiences were visiting some locals making chocolate, hiking through the jungle, boat ride and saw probably 80 dolphins. The ocean is great too!

Several good restaurants within walking distance last time I was there. Easy bus ride to more populated areas.

I've been considering Costa Rica (and the other central american countries) later this year as well. Going coast-FI and would love a long affordable break with surf and good weather -- hopefully plugging into some of the expat communities down there.

May is the start of the rainy season so check the area and time that you are going rain is epic in Costa Rica.

Manual Antonio was was amazing as was Arenal.

MA is very chill and more about nature, beach and eco if you are looking for a peaceful beach vacation surrounded by nature it is great.

Arenal area is also very laid back and centers around the volcano and hot springs with various eco / jungle activities to do. We stayed at a place called Tabacon and had the entire hot springs to ourself at night and it was amazing. Days were spent hiking the jungle or to waterfall.

San Jose is just a big city and not really a place I would go on vacation.

Jaco seems decent but more of a surfer / party / restaurant town with all the things that come with it. Less Costa Rica / nature vibe

The Caribbean side is a long trip from the airport and has much more crime more of a Caribbean vibe and very different from the rest of CR.  have not been but my friends from Costa Rica avoid it due to the distance and issues.

Guanacaste is popular but I have not visited it yet.

Take a umbrella and poncho if you go in the “green” season

I went there with DH shortly before covid. We unfortunately experienced a freak unseasonable tropical storm that made the trip less fun. That time of year should have been beautiful but we couldn’t see many views through all the rain.

If I were to travel anywhere any time soon, I’d be likely to book a group through GAvdentures. I’ve traveled with them a few times and really enjoyed it. They would help with any covid rules/test/etc. It costs a little bit more than booking on your own, but I generally also get more out of the trip and learn more. And I really enjoy traveling with a local person. The groups are small (like around 10 people) and usually include a few solo travelers, a few couples, a student or two, etc. It’s nice to have someone handling the logistics so you can spend more time doing stuff and less time fiddling with a rental car. This is especially nice when I only had a short window for travel because I had to get back to work. I loved traveling with them in Cambodia and Laos. Finally, this is also a great option for traveling with friends or family. Nobody is responsible for logistics or blamed if a hotel turns out crappy. Whoever wants to go simply signs up and you go have fun.
