Online Mustachian Buddy Wanted
« on: August 01, 2013, 12:35:58 PM »
Hey all,

I live in a small town and Texas and thus have not been able to find any fellow Mustachians to compare goals, savings, etc.

So I had this idea of seeing if anyone was interested in becoming my online Mustachian buddy. I'd be great to have a fellow mustachian to help motivate each other to becoming FI!

I'd like to share and compare savings tricks, our financial goals, paying off debts (basically pushing each other to pay them off faster) assets, credit card debts, etc. I'm just looking for a buddy (or group of 2 to 3) peeps that we can compare daily about goals, share tips, lessons learned from MMM, etc.

Any takers?

Cheers,

Codo

Umm, why not just have this whole board as your buddies?  You can start a journal thread if you want and post to it every day if you like.

This way not only do you get the encouragement and interaction you want, but everyone else also gets to learn from you!

i can see where you're coming from. might help if you post some more info about your current position (plans/debts/job/assets/family situation/location/how motivated you feel) and maybe the kind of people you're looking for (someone just starting out, someone almost retired, someone to be pally with or more of a personal trainer type relationship on both sides)

KT has some good advice, after reading the buddy thread my brain turned to mentor-ship. I would love to find a Canadian Mustachian who could help us navigate Canadian investing and how to plan for a mustachian early retirement. Neither hubby or I learned the investing side of things, and we feel totally lost.

Sometimes having that direct one-on-one contact can help you move forward faster. I love the forums, they are awesome but having someone with experience to aid in the journey can only be a win.

And this is the gift that keeps on giving, as I would be happy to help someone out on their journey now (as long as you don't want investment advice) or in the future.

Anyone interested?

i'd personally like someone to talk to in the UK who has some investing under their belt. i'm not looking to invest (outside my pension) for another 3 years roughly as I want to get a house first and my income is quite low so i have plenty of time to research but it's hard to find the right info and trust it on the internet especially from a uk perspective.

kt - there was a pretty good UK based documentary reviewed on Canadian Couch Potato on passive investing:
http://canadiancouchpotato.com/2012/12/10/passive-investing-the-movie/

I watched it and thought it was a pretty good general overview - I found it a good place to start

I really like this idea, actually. I get what secondcor521 is saying, we could obviously just post stuff on the journal page, but to me it'd be much different and more helpful mentally to have a set few people to email with about progress and whatnot. Basically what churches call a "small group"  (I'm not religious, but I'll steal ideas from anyone who's got 'em)

I agree with kt though, the more we know about you, the easier it is to see if we'd be "compatible" for this sort of thing.

With that in mind:

I'm 29, married no kids, we rent, no debts whatsoever, wife and I both work and make pretty good livings, currently saving about 75% of our net income and approaching (my own definition of) FI hopefully in a couple of years. Anyone in a similar place and want to form a small group email thread?

This is a really good idea. There's a big difference between posting something for a couple thousand strangers and posting something for a small intimate group.

I'd like a Mustachian buddy too! Basic facts about me: 24 years old, born and raised in Manila, multilingual (English, Filipino and French), relatively high income earner, currently saving around 60% of my salary. PM me if you think we could be Mustachian-ly compatible!

My only reason for not personally jumping on something like this is that a small group fades away as interest wanes.  On a forum people can come and go, but you still have the core support.  So while I agree that a small group can have benefits over a large forum (though the large forum can have other benefits as well over the small group - diversity of ideas for example), that large issue immediately outweighs, for me.

Nevertheless, if there were some members who had been around a long time and were looking to get more personal on a small scale and build closer relationships/friendships, I could see something like that being neat.

With that in mind: late 20s, married, no kids, having kids in about 2-3 years, hitting FI around that time or a year or two later, depending on the fates.  Not looking for mentoring or accountability, but comradery .
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Yep KT and StetsTerhune hit it right one the nose...and yes arebelspy I agree, there really has to be a strong commitment if something like this is to continue and not fade.

Basic info:

23 year old. Recent college grad. Student loans = 40K. First job making around 54K. No kids or wife (at the moment haha). Living in the US. Looking for a mentor/buddy that I can pair with to crush these loans out and live a Mustachian lifestyle.

Anyone interested? Serious inquiries only. This is something I want to really dedicate myself to.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

I would still like to turn the personals section into the singles section.  Keep it private for registered users, but open it up to all manner of topics for single mustachians.  There could still be a thread for personals inside.  I really, REAAALLLY would enjoy discussing things with other single people, single moms and dads, and such.

If that isn't doable, I'd love to be in touch with others via PM or e-mail for some mutual cheerleading and idea sharing.  I gave up on my journal because I really can't give a full picture without talking about work and the logistics of having a child and and the ex.  I don't want that public though.  I am 42, newly-ish single and not yet looking, a mom, make a decent income for my area but not enough to get above my current 34% or so savings rate at the moment.  Busy as heck and always on the lookout to make things go better.

I also think that a group chat on Skype would be a hoot.  Virtual meetups!  Hehe.

My latest get-rick-quick plan was to trademark Mustachian Buddy since I started that thread and then get a nickel from everyone who used it.  My Mustachian Buddy said I was being a dick.  See, having an MB really works!  ;-)

In all seriousness, I'm a firm believer in the notion that there are multiple paths to a desired income and if the OP is struggling finding someone with similar values locally, then this kind of thinking outside of the box could work well for him.  Maybe not quite as good a tool as one-on-one, but a good tool all the same.

I'm 27, married no kids, we rent, no debts whatsoever.  I'm a software developer and my wife is trying to start her career as a teacher (i.e. she's substitute teaching).  We got on board a few months ago and theoretically save ~65%, but random things tend to drop that down a little.

I'm down for starting a small group of some sort.

I'm game :)

30, married, no kids, plan to FI in 53 months, and to start IVF 1 year before that. I'm in software dev, hubby is a graphic designer. Gross income is $150k from day jobs, post-tax savings rate was 70% last time I ran the numbers but I should do so again.

Too bad we can't all get beers together...

I like this idea.  How did it turn out?

Info:  32, single, no kids, homeowner (loan via FCC, minimal savings.

What I'm looking for:  I'm more a one on one / small group kind of guy.  Sites like MMM are great but I do find it can get overwhelming.  At the moment, I find I have little ambition to keep up a journal.  Having a few people to share my information with and ask questions more fits my style.  Getting started is what I find to be hardest.  A little one on one coaching would be a great help. :)

I also think that a group chat on Skype would be a hoot.  Virtual meetups!  Hehe.

I really like the Skype idea.  To me a wall of text just doesn't have the same punch as a voice.

I just set up a Mustachian Community on Google Plus. If anyone is interested in hangouts, or whatever. I kind of envision it as an extension of the forum, since there is so much awesomeness here already. Just for online events, off topic discussions, etc.
