Cheapest place to refill propane tank
« on: August 08, 2019, 07:11:26 PM »
I just bought a firepit that runs on propane as an alternative to buying stacks of wood when we go camping.

Writing to you all for ideas now on where I might look to find the cheapest place to refill the propane tank.

I suppose I should have looked into this BEFORE I bought the firepit to compare the costs,
but honestly, some of the appeal is the simplicity of lighting the firepit in all weather
+ not filling up our camper with the smell of campfire smoke.

Please don't mention this to my Country Kin.  They'd swear my Dad raised a City Girl.

Thanks, as always, for any help y'all can provide.

I'm assuming you are talking about a small propane tank and not a home one?

Seriously,  just google "propane near me" and call/shop around.   It will be specific to your area.  I would not do the "exchange" system often seen at gas stations and grocery stores.

I agree with the above poster.  Get it refilled not exchanged, unless you have a crummy tank.  In that case, exchange it for a nice one once then refill from then on.  Around here (NY) an exchange is about 20 bucks and a refill is closer to about 7 bucks.  Don't quote me-I think your normal "gas grill" sized tank holds 2-3 gallons of propane.  The refill places usually sell by the gallon.  Right now propane to the consumer is 3 bucks'ish.  I would ask around to see who others go to.  Companies can sell you propane for whatever price they want.

I take my refills to a landscape nursery.  It’s about 50% of an exchange.  Although they will not refill any tank more than 10 years old.  So periodically, I will exchange an old tank out and search the piles for something much newer.

Well, I watched the King of the Hill video on Propane and I wish I knew where Hank worked around here.
I will look for the cheapest n-hood place to refill the tank that came with my propane firepit.
I'll start with my local Tractor Supply and maybe call the Landscape business up the street.

Thanks for your help, everybody!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
