Cheapest Home Internet Solutions?
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:18:00 PM »
Clear used to offer unlimited 4G WiMAX home internet for 44.95/month. This beats cable by $25/month unless you get the triple play which is $90/month. Now that Clear is part of sprint I see you can no longer get this deal. Are there any other suggestions out there?  Freedom Pop has a $19.99/month option but it's only 10gb/month and everything I read says its shady. Thoughts?

2 years ago I signed up for Verizon FIOS, 15/5 connection w/ a free WiFi router - which they have replaced for me twice when it gets buggy (after 1 hour customer service calls but whatevs).

Cost at the time was $55 with a 1 year contract, and for some reason they gave me ANOTHER $5 off per month.

The connection has been 98% awesome.

To me, this is the price AND service to beat if its available in your area. Then again, I use it for the phone, streaming music and radio, and TV via Netflix+Hulu so I get a lot of value from the good connection.

Depends on where you are.  I get cable (Charter) for $29.95/month - that's internet alone, no TV - and I think they have a $19.95 intro package.

I don't think there are any wireless services without ridiculous limits. 10GB per month?!? Maybe if your only use for the internet is MMM, Gmail, and light Youtube usage.

DSL can be had for $20 per month without a landline. Time Warner offers their slowest (2mbps) plan for $15. Bump that up to $35 and you get 15mbps which is very fast for most users. Share with a neighbor (against the TOS but no one is checking) and your cost for a connection is even smaller.

Bundling services is for suckers (usually), and wireless internet is hideous expensive. If you haven't already, read the first seven posts of the Superguide... or at least read this post.

I used to "split cable WIFI" with my neighbor, then he added a password to his internet. How stingy of him.

Did you try sweetening the deal?  Like with money?  Or threats of bodily harm?

I passive aggressively started letting my dog poop in his yard.

So far, no free internet. But it's a game of wills, and I will win.

I suggest money. I paid my other-side-of-the-wall neighbors $10 a month for the password to their wireless and we were all happy with that arrangement. Until they moved out, now I just do without and have found I really love boardgames.
