The day after I finally received the cool metal card in the mail, I got a fraudulent $5000+ charge on my card and had to cancel it :-(  Luckily both Chase and the store that received the online order immediately contacted me about it.

I'm a little nervous about getting the replacement card in time to finish off my sign-up bonus... I only have about 12 days left.

ETA: How do you destroy a metal credit card?

Take it to your local chase branch.  They can destroy it for you.

Or they will send you a prepaid return envelope if you ask (so I hear)

Or use fire.  A lot of fire.

Just put it through a file shredder at your office.  How could they trace a half shredded card back to you?

A lot of shredders will not cut up the metal card.  On the other hand it makes a great ice scraper.  I have an old (no chip) metal Chase card that I scratched the numbers and mag strip off of and keep in the car as a mini scraper.

I think it was a joke?  What's the point in  breaking the shredder by half-shredding your card?  Of course the information will still be intact, and they will "trace it back to you."

But the user info and magstripe appear to be superficial, embedded in a layer of plastic.  As you say, you can scrape it off (or burn it as I am wont to do).  Take a dremel to the info and the chip.  It doesn't matter if the rest of the card is intact.

Or just throw it in the trash.  99.999999% chance nobody will ever find it in the dump anyways.

We visited the KLM Lounge in Houston on Sunday and it was very nice -- serve-yourself bar and a very nice buffet -- fresh fruit and salad, hummus and veggie tray, soup, etc. etc.

My experience with Priority Pass Lounges thus far.

1. Honolulu IASS Lounge -- Pretty dated, barebones and minimal.

2.  Taipei Plaza Premium Lounge was excellent. While it was not fully enclosed, there was food cooked to order. Plus wine, beer, and other free drinks as well as other snacks and stuff.

3. Nagoya Lounge -- Was shared with United and unfortunately closed to Priority Pass members by the time my flight landed later in the evening. Only open to United First class passengers at that time. I was obviously annoyed at this. The airport terminal itself had an almost completely deserted look and feel.

4. Honolulu Plumeria Lounge (Hawaiian Airlines Inter Island Terminal) -- Not too bad and much better than the IASS lounge. Some breakfast choices with decent amount of fruits.

I'm seeing higher prices since the election, but that doesn't exactly make sense since the dollar is also up.  Is this election related or just normal fluctuations?  I'm kicking myself because I saw a flight I wanted but didn't really have the time to call Chase to match the fare (the flight didn't appear on the Chase site).  Now it's 20-30% more expensive.

I received my card less than a month ago. Once we figured out we can spend $8K in three months or so (we can pay my oldest's college tuition next month), today, we decided to apply for one for my wife too. Her card should be here in a day or two.
In addition, I bought a $300 SouthWest gift card a few minutes ago. As soon as my wife's card arrives she will do the same so that we can take advantage of $300 travel credit for this calendar year. I must say this card is not a bad deal. We are definitely new to this travel hack and credit card churning thing.

It has probably been mentioned somewhere on this thread, but my data point might be helpful.

I applied online through the standard link for this card about a week ago as well as some other Chase cards.

I went into a local branch to open a checking and savings account (I had a coupon for a $500 bonus).  The banker there said that I was prequalified for multiple cards, including the CSR.  I told her I had an app in progress.

My online apps were deferred/declined due to Chase's 5/24 rule.  I stopped by the branch again today and the banker said my preapprovals were good for a month or two.

I plan to go back in and take advantage of the preapprovals to get this and probably the Ink Plus Business card if I can get the 60K UR offer on that one.

Yes that was the joke.

When mine is deactivated I will probably just hang onto it until I have a bon fire and incinerate it then.

Cool,  my metal card arrived today, so my wife and I can each have a card for my account without the "authorized user" bullshit fee.

...after she hits min spend on her own card anyway. I expect we will just consolidate down to my card only since I travel a lot for work.

I definitely think I'm going to hold onto this reserve card for work travel.  In the last month alone I've racked up $6k in reimburseable work travel costs, which with the CSR translates into $270 in Ultimate Rewards travel (3x points, redeemed at 1.5x for travel).  The alternative, the CSP, would have gotten me only $150.  That more than covers the difference in the annual fee, which I consider to be $55 (because the true annual fee for the CSR is $150 due to the $300 travel credit).  My CSP is getting cancelled for sure.

Instead of cancelling the CSP, I recommend downgrading to the CS which has no annual fee. That way it stays on your credit report.

I'm finding the same with work travel and just regular spending.  I am surprised about the points adding up so quickly.  There may be better options for regular spending for those more in the know about juggling categories, etc.

Sure, that works too and I probably will.  Sometimes it's nice to just have less to keep track of, since I've closed a few already and my score is still 800 ish, and I'm not likely to even need a very high score in the near future (no mortgages on the horizon).

After you close the cards, they are still reported for quite awhile. An old card cancelled can still keep helping your score for a long time... until it finally drops off.

I know this to be true, but do they "age" as well?  Lets say I have a 1 year old card.  If I cancel it, is it a 2 year old card next year or does it perpetually bring my average down?  Seems like it probably ages, just checking.

Yes, closed accounts age as well until it drops off your report in 10 years.

ETA: How do you destroy a metal credit card?

Take it to your local chase branch.  They can destroy it for you.

Or they will send you a prepaid return envelope if you ask (so I hear)

The replacement card came today and there was a prepaid envelope thoughtfully included. Nice touch.

I hadn't gotten the full presentation box before, but the replacement card came with the whole fancy package. I have a friend visiting and when she saw it she was appalled at the sheer wastefulness of manufacturing something so fancy and shipping something so heavy just to replace a credit card... and we were both marveling at how Chase is making any profit.

Just starting my Churning journey and we decided Hawaii will be our first trip. I just got my CSR card today and I am looking to double dip the 300$ travel credit.

From my research it appears that the sky team partnership between delta and Korean air is our best option coming from Colorado and using an open Jaw since we plan on multiple islands. Would my best option to use the 300$ travel credit be to simply buy a 300$ delta gift card? my payment due date is January 5th will this still allow me to get the 2016 and 2017 credits?

If you do your travel spend before the December closing date you should be fine.

Does the $300 travel credit only apply to $300 or greater travel purchases or does it apply to any/all travel purchase up to $300?

Any and all, until you've been reimbursed the total $300.

I don't think so, but I can tell you that they are the same prices as google flights for the same flight. If you can find a fare not on the travel portal, you can call their Travel Support number and have them manually book the flight for you. I've done that before because they don't show all carriers on the portal - they have all of their partner airlines on there (OneWorld airlines like American and Alaska, Delta, United, etc.). I wanted a flight on another carrier (JetBlue, Southwest, etc.).  I called to say I saw a JetBlue flight for $X, gave them the dates and flight numbers, and they booked it for me within 10 minutes over the phone for the same price as google flights showed.

So I really pissed them off this week by booking a flight, calling to cancel, booking another flight, calling to cancel, and then booking a new flight after the prices dropped around 50%.

I guess Federal rules give you 24 hours to cancel with no fee, which maybe you all know but was a nice surprise to me.  There's a cancel button on the website but it never worked for me (don't know if it was me or some other problem).

Got some nice flights from CA to Europe for like $450 (30k in points)

So, I got my 100,000 point sign up bonus a few days ago, then transferred 90,000 of them to United and booked two tickets to Hawaii for next year for $22.50. lol. Next, I booked the hotel stay and paid a $300 deposit this calendar year and the remaining balance on the hotel will be charged next year when I actually take the trip, so I'll get the additional $300 dollar credit then.

Two round-trip tickets from the DC area to Hawaii and a one week stay at a resort all for like $250 or so out of my pocket. lol. Thanks Chase!

That's quite a deal but I'm wondering.    Why transfer 90k points to United when you can book United directly via Chase and get 1.5x on the points?  That is 135k worth towards travel.

The points were worth more to me by transferring to United. For example, booking the United flight through chase would have cost 59-60k points per traveler. So, 120k points total booking through Chase. Transferring to United allowed me to book the flights at 22.5k points per flight per traveler - 90k points total.

Keep in mind, we booked the United awards "Saver" flights, so that's where the savings came into play. These flights are normally 45k points per flight per traveler through United, but the "Save" flights are in the middle of the week and at odd-ball hours. Personally, I don't give a damn what time of day or week the flight is if I'm only paying $22.50 for it. Especially if its 6k miles away or however far Hawaii is from the east coast. haha.

It isn't, as long as the purchase posts before December 31! You get the credit immediately after the purchase, you don't have to wait until the end of the statement period (which might push you into 2017 at this point). Airline gift cards are a good option if you're planning on booking a flight later in 2017.

I don't think the cut off is Dec 31, I think it's whatever your december statement date is.  So if your statement date lands on december 10, then you only have until then.  If you purchase after the december 10 statement date, but before december 31, it will still post on your january statement and thus count towards 2017.  At least that is my understanding of it.  Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is correct.

A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for purchases in the travel category, up to $300 in statement credits annually ("annually" means the year beginning with your account open date through the first December statement date of that same year, and each 12 billing cycles starting after your December statement date through the following December statement date).

Well I took the plunge and was approved.  Submitted on Thursday PM and card will be here tomorrow.  After reading tons of info, it basically comes down to this: Are you able to spend more than $4k in the next three months and are you willing and able to do some traveling?  If you answer yes to both then it is a no brainer to go get this card.  The only con I see is a potentially negative impact on your credit rating from opening a new card.  I also thought about the 5/24 rule but since this is pretty much the greatest credit card offer to ever happen I'm no too worried about that.  There is always the chance that a better card will come along that I might not be approved for but it seems unlikely in this case.

Booking some airfare and a cruise tomorrow so I believe I will still be able to squeeze in the $300 travel credit for 2016.

It sounds like the terms and the anecdotal evidence is somewhat in conflict - I got all travel reimbursements immediately (as in, the same day the purchase posted). Chase didn't wait until the end of the statement to credit me. However, I and others didn't make the purchase during the period of ambiguity - while still in 2016 but after the final statement cutoff. So, I suppose proceed at your own risk and do the purchase as early in December as you can, and then check the UR portal, which has a little counter for the calendar year on it to see whether it counted toward 2016 or 2017.

I don't think they are in conflict.  I also got mine posted immediately, but it sounds pretty clear from their terms which year it will post for.  If you make the purchase after your december closing date, but before december 31, it will post towards your 2017 credit as per the terms regardless of when they actually credit your account.  I can't guarantee that will actually happen, but that's what it says will happen, and I wouldn't personally risk it.

FYI:  You cannot buy United Gift Certificates anymore.

From the United web site:
Give loved ones the world

We've decided to discontinue the United gift certificate program, so gift certificates are no longer available for purchase. You can redeem any existing gift certificates and check your balance on the Check Gift Certificate Balance page.

You can still help your family and friends get to where they want to go by purchasing gift miles. On the Buy Miles page, simply select “Give Miles” and log in to your MileagePlus account to get started.

We also invite you to check out united.com gift registry to see if your favorite traveler is registered to receive the gift of United flights.

Yeah, this one is pretty straightforward.  The charge has to show up on the December statement, which is before whenever the closing date is in December.

Note that if you're just getting the card now, you might need to call and specifically request a December closing date.  It's possible they'll give you more than a month for the first statement, which would turn it into a January statement, which means you lose the credit for 2016.

P.S.  Anyone else hesitate to post in a thread with lots of pages because you can never get out of it going forward?  Oh well, seems like a helpful enough point to share.

Anyone know what the grace period is?  Right now my account says next payment is due Jan 20 but it doesn't say anything about the statement date.

I am not sure on this product, but I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred that has a closing date of the 23rd and is due on the 20th.  So if the grace periods are similar between Chase products I would guess your statement date would also be around the 23rd.

You can always send them an email or secure message or chat.

I have the same grace period, a month minus three days.

My first statement was 2 weeks after I signed up, so beware to people signing up now and trying to squeeze in a $300 credit. You might get an unexpectedly short time period to make the purchase(s).

I was actually trying to avoid contacting them about this matter because I don't want to take any chances with them changing my dates around, LOL.  It is what it is at this point.  Time will tell but I think I'm still good for the 2016 $300 credit.

Got my card yesterday, and did my travel spend. Pretty sure that I just barely made the cutoff. Payment due date is Jan 23, so I am pretty sure this will be Dec statement. The statement date had not yet loaded on the account.

I will update post when I know for sure.

Question! Can you use the card to buy gift cards to count towards the $4k to get the 100k points? I got the card a couple weeks ago and not sure I'll be able to get the $4k without buying lots of junk. I'm thinking about buying a gift card at my local grocery store so that I can use that money throughout the year, will that count towards the $4k?

I'm pretty sure it does. That was my plan if I didn't make it. But since I need tires for a car and got an e-bike, plus normal bills I made the 4k! I already got $200 travel credit from a mini-vacation we took, since we have to fly across the U.S for a wedding and to see family, we will now essentially get a free vacation with some travel credit left over, minus food and other little things. I do love this card.

Sure.  Buy yourself grocery gift cards, gas gift cards, and Amazon gift cards
if you need to meet your minimum spend.  As long as you aren't purchasing
any more than usual (i.e. don't treat your Amazon gift card as "free money"),
it will work fine.

I don't often need to do this, but one advantage is you can wait until the end
of your 3 month spend window before buying the gift cards -- so you don't need
to purchase any more than necessary.

Posting timeline update for benefit of those who are considering applying for the Chase Sapphire Reserve CC deal.

Applied 11/27
Received card 11/29
Travel purchase 11/29 - still pending as of this moment - delta airline tickets
Statement end date is 12/26 per customer service, not showing up in my online portal yet
AF not showing yet, either

So I am in the clear for 2016 $300 travel credit, and will use same in 2017.

If you planning to apply now and hope to use the 2016 travel credit, it might be difficult to get a statement end date in December - but certainly worth a call to customer service to inquire.

Thank you all for your inspiration.

The only way to truly tell if you will get the bonus for 2016 and 2017 is to see if the bonus meter resets when 2017 rolls around.  The is a circle chart thing you can see when you login to your account.  The bonus may be posting but that doesn't necessarily mean it's counting for 2016.  I can confirm it does post instantly after the charge makes it past pending.

Is this on the main screen?

Under "THINGS YOU CAN DO"?

I can't find the meter and I've seen screen shots from others and I just don't have anything like that.  (I swear I'm not techno illiterate!)
