I misplaced this card and had to order a replacement.  Then I later found the old card under my bed.  Rather than have it lying around, I proceeded to dispose of it.

Usually, I drop unwanted cards in the cc slot of my crosscut shredder.  Well, the card pretty much ruined my shredder.  Clunks and makes weird noises now.

Tried scissors.  Tried Xacto knife.  Nope.  Tried utility knife.  Can't cut it, not even a little.

Stepped it up and tried diagonal cutting pliers (dikes) for metal.  Not.

Then aviation snips.  That had to work...not.

I then attacked it with large tree loppers.  Somewhat worked, but could only cut small bits at a time and was probably gonna dull the loppers.

At this point I could see the card is a plastic coated sheet of metal.  I gave up trying to cut it up into bits.  Didn't try a hack saw, that would take too long.

Finally, I took it out in the back yard and blasted it with a MAPP gas torch to burn the plastic off the metal and destroy the PII printed on the card.  It created a big black cloud of probably toxic smoke.  Neighbors probably wondering wth was going on.

It was like a scene from the original Terminator movie.  The metal plate is still pretty much intact.

Sheesh

That's why Chase will send you a postage paid envelope to send it back in so they can dispose of it...

Lol. An angle grinder might do it.

Yeah, I thought the card was lost and long gone, until I found it under the bed way later.  If they sent a return envelope, it was long gone as well.

I was also thinking of beating it to death with a sledge hammer on concrete.

You've wasted a perfectly good excuse to build an electric arc furnace!

Wait, the card isn't totally melted down?  Yeah, arc furnace time. :D

They don't send it with the card.  Call the number on the back of the card and ask for one.  They will send it.

Looking up arc furnace...

You'll need some fire brick, a transformer you can run backwards (scrap microwaves are good), and some carbon rods you can get from a lantern battery.

This should generate more than enough temperature to dispose of a card.

I think the envelope is cheaper, though. :/  I imagine an arc furnace is considered a rather frivolous luxury around here...

OP, not sure where Point B is in relation to my location (the SW corner of NH) but if you want to build an arc furnace, I'll let you have my old microwave for parts (built circa 1996).  All I ask is that you post a video of it in use for the rest of us to enjoy.

Ha, I just received a new Sapphire card in the mail, and couldn't believe how heavy it was - like the equivalent of 3 normal cards!

This thread makes me curious: does anyone know which metals are in the alloy they use for these cards? A quick Google search was not fruitful.

Have to remember that one...next time.  That is too cool.

I destroyed my metal Ritz-Carlton card with an angle grinder. Just another option, perhaps less melty...

I love the Chase cards for being plastic coated metal. I’ve had cashiers take them and say, “Woah, nice card.” I got rid of my last Sapphire card when I got my Amazon  Prime VISA, and was glad to find the Amazon card is the same construction. Feels good in the hand, and they last forever.

I know it’s a bit too late for yours, but I had Chase send me the return envelope to let them deal with it.

Heh. The Ritz-Carlton weighs slightly over twice as much as a Sapphire.

Thanks for the heads up (and the laugh), Sayonara. Quite timely, as I needed to dispose of mine this week. I probably would out one shredder were it not for your post.

FWIW, I ended up dropping my card off in person at a local Chase branch.

I almost destroyed my shredder with an earlier card.   Last week I used sander on my last Chase card, then a hammer and chisel (it only bent slightly.)   The next day the replacement envelope arrived.

I imagine a welding torch would do a good job as well.

I've got a metal Discover card, so when that expires I'll take a torch to it and see if I can destroy it.

I have had one of those metal cards on my desk for MONTHS.  Couldn't figure out what to do with it when scissors didn't work. Now I have so many ideas!

We had the metal Ritz Carlton too. That was one HEAVY card! Fun to get the comments from cashiers...but man, I was happy when we cancelled it at 11 months. Really hated how much weight it added to our wallets.

We never did figure out how to destroy it so still have it stashed somewhere.

You should test their usefulness as a conductor.

Hook up a microwave oven transformer backwards (gets you something like 1V at 1500A), and see how long they last before:
- Bursting into flames.
- Glowing.
- Melting.
