Chase Sapphire bonus-getting spouse their own card
« on: August 02, 2016, 09:46:46 PM »
I got a Chase Sapphire card earlier this year and got the 50,000 points for spending $4K in 3 months. I also added my husband as an authorized user.
I now want to get him the same card, with him being primary, to get the bonus again. I emailed Chase and asked them if he will qualify and their answer isn't really clear.
Has anyone been able to get the sign on bonus first for themselves and then a spouse?
Thanks!

Yes.  Both halves of a couple can get the bonus, and the authorized user bonus as well.

This probably isn't a concern if you aren't actively pursuing cc sign up bonuses, but authorized user accounts from Chase show up on credit reports and count towards Chases limit of 5 accounts in the last 24 months in order to be approved for most of their cards. You can try and talk your way around it if you have Auth user accounts but ymmv... Basically the authorized user bonus has downsides and isn't always worth it

What happens after year one? Do you pay the 95.00 yearly fee, or cancel the card?

Up to you.  If you get a benefit from the card and are using it, pay the fee and keep using it.  If you just got it to get the signup bonus, cancel just before the fee hits (or just after and they will credit it back to you - but don't make any purchases after the fee hits).

You can also convert it to a Freedom (free) card, iirc.

OP, you can always remove your spouse as an AU a month or so prior to them applying. We're planning on doing this ourselves.

What are folks doing these days to meet the spending requirements for the bonus? It seems like manufactured spending is getting a little more difficult.

We got the CSP since we were buying a house and had to buy a $1k fridge anyways. Including the other misc house stuff, some auto related stuff, we should be easily hitting the $4k/3 month spend.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
