Cash on hand...
« on: November 25, 2016, 12:29:54 AM »
I was at my parents tonight and was looking in my parents safe when my mom mentioned she took a bunch of hundreds to the bank to deposit to pay property taxes because she didn't have time to transfer money from elsewhere. And I'm like well why didn't you take all the 20's and 50's in this envelope so the money in here would take up less space? And she's like well I was in a hurry and that was not the nearest thing. Then she says something like besides....these are all hundreds and hand me a strap of benjis. LOL WTF.

She obviously likes to have cash in a safe. Could it be black money? That would explain the behaviour.

I heard that before from one of my uncles. Having black earned money is not that much fun, because you can only spend it abroad. In our country all big transactions are reported, so you can't just buy a new car cash without anyone noticing it.

If this is not the case, sould your mother be told that it is much more expensive to pay bills at the bank instead of via internetbanking? At least here in Norway it is and it is only elderly people who still like to pay their bills in cash at the bank. They pay like 5 $ extra for each transaction.

Over here, plenty of places won't take bigger bills, so it makes a certain amount of sense to take the bigger bills to the place that you know will accept them.

Also, do you share the safe with your parents or were you just looking through it pdxmonkey? To me that comes across as the WTF bit of the story.

She was getting something out of it for me. As far as the bill she just deposited the money then write a normal check so it didn't cost any extra. I did ask why at worst this money want in a CD or something so it at least gets some interest. The money is legit so it could be named or ingested anywhere. It's not drug money or anything like that and I knew my parents kept some, but didn't realize it was that much.

They're retired already and generally still live on less than their retired income so I guess they don't really need the interest but still.

Well, the safe is better than the sock drawer!  Its also important to always keep cash on hand for girl-scout cookie season.
