Car Insurance in NYS
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:45:38 AM »
Looking for advice on any atypical car insurance companies out there (no Geicos, Progressive, etc.). I live in New York state, which already has some of the highest rates in the country and I am currently getting hammered. I have been shopping the last few days for a new policy with no luck.

My problem is I was in an accident about 1 year ago. In some serious snowy weather I was unable to stop in bumper-bumper traffic and re-ended another vehicle, so I was 100% at fault. Since it was at a slow speed, and the other vehicle was an SUV (I drive a Nissan Altima), there was no damage to their car. However, my car needed a new bumper/hood, etc. The claim amounted to about $6,000 total. Not a ton of money (or so I thought). Geico raised my rates to the equivalent of $40/month.

I found a local insurance company (TSC Direct) via Insurance Panda that I contacted. THey initially gave me a quote of $88/month but when they heard about my recent accident they said they couldn't offer me ANY coverage... bummer.

So, if anyone has ANY recommendations I'd be truly grateful. Thanks!

Have you tried taking a defensive driving course?  It is suppose to remove a point from your record in NYS.

Gin,

Yes I recently updated my course this summer, so I should be good with that for 3 years. I have no points on my record (as far as I'm aware) as it was a minor accident, however I could be wrong.

When I lived in NY, my USAA car insurance was 10% cheaper if I took defensive driving…I believe it is every three years that you have to re-take to keep the National Safety Council certificate.

Have you tried Costco? When I called and got a quote they didn't ask for my member number until I was ready to sign up, so you should be able to get a quote.

Costco offers insurance? Was not aware, is it backed up by any major insurance agency?
