Car Insurance by the Mile
« on: January 19, 2017, 11:20:23 AM »
I was curious if anyone here has tried car insurance by the mile.  One of the biggest is a company called Metromile.  This is new to me and I figured it was perfect for many in this community.  They claim most people save 50% a year compared to regular coverage.  I ran across an article talking about it and it was the first time I had heard of it.  Maybe it is similar to the Progressive "snapshot" where you pay based on how you drive.

I'm in CA and have multiple vehicles that get driven less than 5K/yr and they weren't able to save me any money. So far Allstate has been the best for me for auto. I have USAA for home though.

I stumbled upon it a few months ago and received mix responses.

Definitely an interesting concept, wasn't worth it for me at the moment, but when I  graduate college and move close to work I can foresee it being a good idea.

We were using Metromile until we got rid of the car entirely a few months ago. We were driving very little and it was a significant savings over Geico for us. I never had to file an insurance claim with them, so I have no idea what it's like to deal with them on that front.

I've had it for two years - or was/is the best deal for me. I guess everyone has to do the numbers themselves. I had one minor claim and had good customer service but my rates did go up. . . And they are still the cheapest for my situation.

Thank you for the comments.  Unfortunately it doesn't work for me - as I drive quite a bit - but I liked the model.

We just bought a car (after not having one for several years), and we signed up for Metromile because it seemed like the best deal for us. We haven't had the car for very long yet, but when we were shopping around for quotes it looked like given how much we were planning on driving our car, Metromile was going to be a good $20/mo cheaper than most of the other companies. I can update later once we have a bit more data.
