Car Cover
« on: April 08, 2015, 11:55:40 PM »
I've managed to cut down my driving from every day to 3-4 days a week, and hope that I will continue to cut down. Hooray! However, this means my car spends a lot of time sitting parked outside, getting bathed in leaves and dust and bird droppings. It's getting to the point that to wash it as often as it needs would result in a waste of water, time, money, or all three.

As a result, I would like to get a car cover. It seems like the purchasable car covers for my small hatchback run between $70-100, which seems like a racket, but the few instructions I've found for DIY covers make me uncertain that they save much money. Plus, there are lots of (overblown?) horror stories about people using the wrong type of fabric and getting moisture trapped, or scratching the paint, etc.

Does anyone have experience with car covers, either cheaply purchased or handmade? What is the most sensible course of action?

Can you park somewhere not under a tree? :)

I see no purpose in a car cover when your car is still being used 50% of the week...

Be honest with yourself: bird droppings are fairly rare, and the leaves blow off when you start driving. It's going to be easier to clean the droppings off the car versus the cover.

Either way, it's $100 for your peace of mind ultimately, and if those are your priorities: who cares?

You're being upsold. Get a $40 car cover, as long as it fits a small car.

I've had the *official* Honda Fit cover in my Amazon cart for like two years . . . it's two hundred bucks (thus I've never pulled the trigger)

Washing/waxing your car doesn't seem popular in these forums but its an easy DIY way to keep your car looking nice (and possibly help maintain value?). I like a clean car and have not evolved past it.

I live by the ocean and my car is outside 24/7, I'd like to leave it covered for days at a time when biking.

Maybe I'll explore cheaper options and realize my car cover dreams
