Caleb Hammer Financial Audit videos
« on: January 23, 2023, 03:15:30 PM »
This is my new favorite ASMR.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfUO66_Lo_g&t=6s

Basically people from around Austin volunteer to get roasted by this kid about their horrible financial and life choices.

I was skeptical, but you've got me watching "23-Year-Old With More Debt Than Anyone Should Ever Have" and this is good!

The best ones are where the kid is making some insane financial decisions and he tries to rip into them but it turns out their parents are paying their rent, college and giving them a car too.
Then he's like "hmm... well.. you have.. 50$ bank fees though..." lol.

Jeez!! I don't think I would have the patience that these kids have. I almost punched my screen listening to that delusional kid. Good to know about this channel though.

Funny how one person’s ASMR is another person’s “oh my god THIS IS MAKING ME CRAZY WHAT THE HELL MAKE IT STOP”

:D

I love his car rants, which just epitomizes everything that is on this forum. I also really appreciate that he's more understanding of the real-world situation than other financial analysts. I'm the same age and I can absolutely see a few missteps or bad luck and I'd be screwed, and some people (cough Dave Ramsey cough) seem to live in a fantasy easy mode.

Also his advice is awesomely face punchy. He straight up says your life is going to suck for a year. You have no fun, no life, nothing, but then it'll be better.

I should get my eyes fixed as I read this as "Financial Adult Videos" and was pretty damn sure I didn't want to watch that ;-)

I wonder if in the future some of these folks will regret taking a few hundred bucks to make an embarrassing video that will live forever on the internet.

If it makes them get their shit together, probably worth it. It also provides proof of their progress.

I've watched a handful of his videos, and some of them gave me an icky feeling. It feels like punching down. If the guests are being compensated and actually manage to learn something, I guess that's great. There's just something about gawking at the guests' financial hardships (let alone obvious mental health issues) that is a little too cringey for me. That being said, I have enjoyed watching some of the facepunches delivered to spendypants high-earners.

Indeed, his videos remind my of the old JayWalking sketch Leno used to do where he would find the dumbest people around and make fun of them when they incorrectly answered simple questions.

Well to be fair the people volunteer to be on his show, he doesn't edit them to make them look dumb and many of them are actually fans ( somehow ) lol.

A lot of of people are just of the mindset that they should enjoy themselves now and deal with the consequences later and you can't talk sense into them because for them the future is just some vague abstraction.

Yeah I felt this too. I also found the whole thing (the handful of videos I tried to watch) to be far too slow moving. I'm glad there are younger people interested in this guy, but I'm probably outside the demographics for the way the videos move- too much convo, not a quick enough (or organized) drilling down to the financial facts and I'd also prefer less judgement in his overall approach. But my dude has over 100k followers so he's definitely hitting it right with many other people.

I tried to watch a few, but a 20 something acting like a supposed expert I find hard to take seriously.

I've watched (tbh mostly listened while doing other stuff) several videos and I think it is great that there is someone younger that Dave and Suze doing a format like this. Love the contempt for car culture, even in Texas. Love the 'don't count your chickens before they hatch' advice on student loan cancellation. But I think Caleb needs to stick to financial advice and stay away from career advice though. Like, he recommends driving Uber Eats to everyone for extra money and has made other comments about people's jobs that had me raising my eyebrows.

There was one with a student getting a graduate degree in the arts who said they knew CAD and did some graphic design work and Caleb even told them to drive Uber eats! Despite these other skills that might dovetail with the arts and enhance their career long term!

Right, it does not look like he's doing any sleazy editing to make them look even worse, but like the JayWalking segment he's definitely filtering out everyone but the worst. For example, here are the thumbnail titles of his last ten interview videos:
  • Spending Everything!
  • She's Done For
  • Immature Child!
  • Lost Everything
  • It's Never-Ending!
  • Worst Person Ever
  • Complete Mess
  • How not to use credit cards
  • Pyramid Scheme
  • Worst Ever

Clickbaity titles and thumbnails are how you make money on Youtube now, sadly.
Caleb's been really good about growing his channel super fast, kudos to him.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
