I would make sure there even are enough stations along the way. This time of year your range will be in the tank especially if you run into bad weather and have to wait for a road to open. I wouldn't think it would be safe going more than 75 miles between stations this time of year.

Ship the car.  Add 750.00, more or less, to your costs when calculating the viability of it.

yeah, there's no reason to get greedy.  9k off the purchase price is already a steal!

one word of caution with charging at Nissan dealerships - I have found the chargers to be broken on many days.
in my local area, they are abused by the free charging program and unavailable for weeks at a time.
I'm now reluctant to count on nissan dealerships to fill up on longish trips.

I haven't reached out to the dealership yet, but I am tempted to fly out there (using miles) and make the 1100 mile drive back (11 charging station visits) to save $17,500 off a brand new car.

I wouldn't try to make a 1100 mile drive in a Leaf.  Take a friend with a pickup and a trailer, or get it shipped.

I saw this during the week and I am very tempted by it, just wasn't in the plan to buy one this soon so have to mull it over a bit. I am in Wichita, KS so a lot closer than you. If I purchase I would just trailer it home, in your case I'd have it shipped.

Think about looking into the 0% 72month $4k cash back finance deal (and if possible the $1k recent graduate). We qualify for both so makes this an extremely attractive deal to us.

Make sure your tax burden is enough to collect the full tax credit though too. Many people on here will have issues with that what with 401k and IRA maxed and all.

I just called one of the dealers and the $10,000 discount is only available to KCP&L (Kansas city power and light) participants. This restriction is also included on the flyer here: http://www.metroenergy.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/KC-fleetail-flyer-11-23-2016-final.pdf

I was looking on the dealers websites last night and they were adding to 10k discount automatically which is odd if only available to KCP&L customers but I do feel its likely restricted. What benefit do KCP&L get if all the Leafs purchased leave the area of their charge points.

Yes, this is something many will encounter. I see it as a good opportunity for a Traditional to Roth IRA conversion unless im overlooking something.

I don't think they did it because they would get 10k in benefit from it. A leaf over 250k miles will use around 100,000kw/h of electricity, the cost of which is about 10k-25k, the profit of that is around 1k to 5k roughly maximum.

Sure but they have invested heavily in charge stations recently. http://insideevs.com/update-kansas-citys-massive-charging-infrastructure-rollout/

I'm sure they will also benefit greatly from a more efficient use of their grid also as most cars will charge overnight when the grid is underutilized. Back home in Ireland electricity rates are less for off peak times to encourage usage then through storage heaters, running washing machines etc overnight to help even out the draw on the grid.

So in my effort to find a local dealership in Orlando, FL who might honor or create this type of participation/deal for a group buy, I've run into some used Nissan Leafs for around $9K.

Since the local market only has these vehicles starting at $36K MSRP, even if they honored the $10K off, that's still $26K - $7K with the federal tax incentive (Assuming it doesn't get squashed in 2017 with the new administration), that's still $19K net.

I'm wondering if the used option (25K miles) isn't better for a 2014 rather than a brand new one for $19K net.

+1. This is a bit confusing for a lot of people. Unless you have a very high tax burden you likely won't collect the full $7500. I thought it was an actual refund until I looked into it some more.

Dealerships about 100 miles from me have knocked 10K off the price of 2016 Leafs. Brining them down to around 20K before any rebates/credits. Sadly I live in a state that seemingly despises clean energy.

I've seen 2015 Leafs selling for around 10K on Carvana. And they have free delivery right to your house.

Hmm, I am just outside of KC.  I might have to do some number crunching this weekend!

My daily commute is 90 miles so the 2017 model would be great but there is also a charging station next door to my office so the 2016 model could work if I charged it at lunch.  Since I drive a low mileage Prius currently, the last time I did look at numbers it would take a long time to pay for itself.

I wouldn't try a 90 mile commute with a stated range of 107 miles, unless I could guarantee that I'd have charger access.  And relying on work chargers or such is dangerous as more people have EVs, and stations are often not well maintained.

Keep the Prius for now, and maybe look for a used Bolt in a few years.

The charging stations are brand new as of this summer and I was shocked that they put them in as my work location is pretty middle of nowhere.  I have never seen anybody parked at them so although I am not too worried about them being free for a quick charge during lunch that does lead to your other point that they might not stay maintained.  That being said the distance has been the hold up for me on an EV and I think I agree about keeping the Prius for now, I keep going back and forth with myself about it.

To everybody else that is reading this, I went by one of the listed dealerships this weekend.  They do not currently have any Leafs on the lot as they have been driving off almost as soon as they drive on the lot since this promotion was announced.  They have 6 on order and 5 are already spoken for but the can get more in.  They also told me (not sure if it is true) that you have to purchase by 12/31 so that it can be processed before the 1/3 date.

I have a 2015 and it's just turned 2 years old. My initial range was 104 miles (as reported when full). My range now when full is reported at 93 miles. That's acceptable to me (actually a little better than I expected), but it would make a 90-mile commute 3 years in a pretty dicey proposition.

Range is also worse in the cold winter than in summer.

I love my LEAF, but my daily RT is 17 miles. If it was 5 times that length, the LEAF wouldn't be the right car, even with the 2017 battery.
