Bob Brinker's Marketimer
« on: July 05, 2023, 09:49:44 PM »
I was an avid listener of his financial radio program from the early 90s to 2018, when it ended. However, he kept his Marketimer newsletter going until this past month of June.

After having paid for an annual subscription like usual, I just received a refund for the last 6 months of the year, as the newsletter will no longer be published. There was no indication from him this was coming last month.

He is where I learned about Mutual funds back in the 90s and started investing. I already missed the radio program the last 5 years and now the newsletter too. Anyone else familiar with him?

I clicked your post after seeing the title and thinking "Whoa, now there's a blast from the past!"  I was never a subscriber, but I do recall hearing about it a lot.

I listened to Brinker’s radio show decades ago. His idea of “ critical mass” pretty much describes FIRE stash.

Having spent plenty of time cruising on nuclear-powered ships, I heard him mention critical mass on the radio and instantly knew what he meant without further explanation.  I started putting dollar figures and math into that concept, and a few years later discovered the community of early retirees, and already knew how they did it.

I spent a lot of days stuck in traffic on the DC beltway with a zero net worth and trying to get to a job I hated listening to Bob, along with Dave Ramsey who was just starting out (Dave was a good cheerleader, always with the same obvious advice [which is totally needed at the start to get hard core], Bob was the smart guy with tons of good advice I would have never known about at that young age).

I'm worth $5M today..... which I would have never guessed possible back then.....

I started listening to Bob in the late 80s. I had a job repairing VCRs, where I could set my own hours. I would come in just before 3pm CST and leave some time after 6pm both Saturday and Sunday. I did my repairs while listening to Bob and getting an education. I first learned about Vanguard from him. I owe him a lot a the credit for us reaching critical mass. In later years he dropped the Sunday show. I also received his newsletter for many years. Thank you, Bob!
