Blocked frugal related websites at work
« on: February 06, 2014, 11:09:37 AM »
Just went to go post that I have free moving boxes to give away on freecycle, only to discover that I can't open that website at work.  (And please note, I can access everything from facebook to craigslist at my work, so it's baffling why this is blocked.)  What about you?  Any mustachian type websites that are blocked at work that are surprising to you?

We have absolutely no blocking in our office, but we are a relatively small operation of 25 or so.

Perhaps they are trying to keep their little drones spending more $ on stuff so they are compelled to keep banging the corporate drum? Although since they allow craigslist maybe not. Facebook/Pinterest type sites would likely promote a more spendy/consumerist lifestyle, so I could see why these would be allowed.

I'm guessing they subscribe to a blocking service and can choose the "categories" that they block.  The categories are entered by humans and sometimes there are mistakes.  So, for example, they might block "malware" sites and freecycle might have been hacked at one point and had some malware.  Even if it was fixed, it could still be listed under "malware".

Anyways, try the ZenMate plugin for Chrome.  I like it a lot.  I use it for privacy since I'm pretty sure higher ups could pull my history and may not react favorably to MMM.

Yeah, I doubt it's some sort of corporate conspiracy, just some IT guy somewhere who decided that anything with free in the URL was probably malware or something.

Ah, malware makes sense.  I didn't quite understand how freecycle made it onto a list otherwise.  I meant - they put out notices telling people not to go on facebook (I rarely do, and not at work), but don't block it, so it was odd this was blocked.

I'm pretty sure this site was blocked at my last job.
