I'm not exactly sure where to post this, but I was so excited that I wanted to share this with people who might geek out about it as well.
My town is going to adjust the bike traffic lights to turn green faster when it rains, so bikers won't have to wait as long. The city wants to make biking even more appealing this way. How freaking cool is that??
Biking is already pretty appealing here because the country is as flat as a pancake and safety for bikers is very high. It's so cool that the city council is putting effort into increasing bike traffic and lowering car traffic!

I would be happy if I didn't have to figure out how to get the light coming to work to change green, without getting up on the sidewalk and pushing the pedestrian button... and then trying to figure out how to legally and safely rejoin the traffic lane (there's a car turn lane in the way, and I want to go straight through).
I guess I could just wait for a car to come... eventually.

From a Norwegian person I learned a trick to make the pedestrian traffic light to go green faster. Apparently there is a button hidden on the underside of the push button device. When pressed, the light will go green faster. This is a feature for handicapped people. I am not sure why they should spend less time waiting than us others, but we others can of course also use the button.
Try to find out whether this also works in other countries.
By the way: Norway has a VERY long way to go before becoming a good cycle nation.

Local police officer told me when I was riding motorcycles that if the light doesn't change after a couple minutes and nobody is coming to safely cross the intersection anyhow. Just be careful. That's what I do on a bicycle when that topic happens.
My town barely has sidewalks let alone bike lanes...

Utrecht, the Netherlands. We excell in bikes and beer. Job market's good, housing is expensice though...

does this apply to cars too? how do you not get ran over if the cars from on coming traffic still gets green light

Bikes and cars mostly have separate traffic lights. Also, a car is always at least 50% responsible due to strict protection laws. This makes drivers very careful around bikes, because even if the biker is at fault, the driver's insurance will have to cough up at least 50% of the cost. If the driver is at fault, it's 100% of course. And it helps that everyone bikes, so drivers know what it's like to bike. 84% of Dutch people have at least 1 bike (true statistic).

87% of the Dutch speak English. Not always without a horrible accent though, but we're fairly proficient. We don't really expect someone to speak Dutch, because it's a little difficult and only maybe 30 million people worldwide speak it. If you were to move here permanently, then most people would expect you to at least give the language a try, though. Not that you'd really need it in any of the bigger cities.
