Best websites/techniques to find deals on stuff?
« on: December 19, 2014, 12:17:43 AM »
What techniques/websites do you guys use to find the best deals on something you want to buy?  I thought I'd share some of my go-to sites, but would love to hear how you guys shop.  Offline tips are awesome as well (especially groceries)!  It's a fine line to walk, as I've found I get caught up in buying stuff I don't need if I am constantly looking at flyers and deal sites.  But, for stuff I need, I like to get the best price.

Here are some sites I use:
Reddit/r/FrugalMaleFashion - Really active community with great deals on mens fashion
http://www.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion

RetailMeNot - Coupons voted on by users.  I check here whenever I see an empty promo code field in my shopping cart
http://www.retailmenot.com

Stingycoin - no ads, aggregates deals from multiple sites and sends alerts when there's a deal for an item on your watchlist
http://stingycoin.com

CamelCamelCamel - Amazon price tracker / history, nice chrome extension to easily see price history directly in the browser
http://camelcamelcamel.com

Reddit/r/GameDeals - Active community for game deals, but its normally stuff I will impulse buy so I try not to go there.  Maybe useful if you're looking for a gift for a gamer

Random fun fact:
Some ecommerce sites target Mac and Android users with higher prices

I'm Canadian and use Smart Canucks:  http://smartcanucks.ca/

They promote a lot of unMustachian shit, but I don't want that stuff anyway.  I use it primarily to find good deals on things I do buy in stores like groceries.  I have gotten some free stuff using coupons they posted about.  Mittens, socks, grocery items.  Their forum also has tips for optimizing price matching and rewards programs.

I use CamelCamelCamel all the time.  Nothing like being able to gauge whether to buy now or wait for a price drop.

Plus, you can setup alerts and they'll email you when the price hits a certain threshold.  This can be pure gold.  I've bought some tools for absolutely ridiculous prices during a sharp dip.

Yeah I love it too, hard to use Amazon without it!

For groceries and drugstore items, I like this site:

Groceries are a big chunk of most people's budgets and this site makes it easy to get the costs down dramatically.  Do it consistently, stockpile the good deals, and you'll find that you will save a lot more money at your local grocery store than at the big box discounters (e.g., Costco, Sam's).

Besides the things already mentioned, using sites like Fatwallet or Topcashback to get extra click through bonuses on top of coupons from Retailmenot

I use Hip2Save for couponing deals at places like Target.

For clothes, I use Twice - they have brand name, used clothing, shoes and purses at good prices, especially when they have a sale - stuff like Ann Taylor and the Gap. You can also sell your clothes to them: liketwice.com/BfxKb

Thanks for the info! I know I need to put a little more effort into groceries...coupons seem so daunting though

I use Ebates to shop around for online sales and coupons when I need something specific. It has cash back awards which I'm sure could be tricky if one isn't careful (e.g., "if I spend more at Store X, I get more cash back!).  I only use it for things that I know I would otherwise waste time and gas driving around town to find.
