BEST poster and contributor on MMM forums is…….?
« on: January 10, 2025, 04:34:54 PM »
My definition of best would be the poster who takes so much time out of their day to post insightful, thought out, fact driven posts and responses that take a TON of time to do and write out solely for the purpose of helping others.   I will list my top 5 in order of best to next best.

1. @Metalcat
2. @ChpBstrd
3. @Dicey
4. @Nords
5. @RWD

If I was picking number 6 it would be @MrGreen

There are so many others but these were my top 5 after spending some time thinking about it.  Number 1 to me was a no brainer.

I appreciate everyone who posts to this forum in civility and good faith, sharing their personal experience, knowledge, or to ask questions.  It's a great community and I am thankful to be a part of it.

To be clear I also appreciate everyone on this forum.  I was highlighting my list of people that I one appreciate their writing styles immensely and two go out of their way above and beyond the norm imo to help others exposing at times their own lives for the good of others.

I think this list would be slightly different for everyone, based on what they personally take the most away from the forum.

For example, my list would look more like this:

1. @Metalcat
2. @Villanelle
3. @Cassie
4. @SunnyDays
5. @grantmeaname

I appreciate everyone, but these are just the people I have learned the most from and/or who have challenged my thoughts and feelings the most to be a better person.

Besides me, probably Metalcat, even though we disagree on 100% of things.

I also like VanillaGorilla's posts.

I like 90% of people's posts. This is a good forum full of smart people. It is one of the few places on the Internet I have ever found where there are smart people and good discussion.

Whoa, I never would have thought I'd be mentioned in this context, and the company on these lists is incredibly flattering.  I'm so glad you find value in some of what I have to say, 8!  (Can I call you "8"?)

I read these forums voraciously, even though I don't post as much (mostly b/c by the time I get to a post someone has responded with the same point, only better).  I truly appreciate the contributions by so many here--it's my sanctuary on the internets.

I've always thought of my Mt. Rushmore as @Metalcat, @nereo, @Laura33, and @Villanelle.  As in, no matter what the thread, if they post, I will absolutely stop and read the whole thing.

Honorable mention goes to @GuitarStv (unapologetic ribald antics); @Zikoris (zen attitude towards life I aspire to); @Kris (straightforward, honest, on point posts); @ChpBstrd (very detailed posts with lots of info); @NorCal (insightful and helpful facts and info); @spartana (interesting and funny); @wenchsenior (always good nuggets of perspective); @Nick_Miller (genuine, interesting, seems to wear heart on internet sleeve); and @sixwings (usually find myself nodding along).  And yeah, I love when @RWD busts out the "are stocks priced too high" thread list.  :)

But I hate to even mention these names because I'm leaving out so many others who have just such amazing posts.  Thank you amazing forum members!

What a nice thread! As one of the longer tenured forum members and one of the younger forum members in age I did a lot of growing up on here. There are a few names that I would add to this list
  • @arebelspy taught me a lot about life and about how much of what we do is about our mindsets and not our money - my wife and I quote an arebelspy-ism to each other probably once a day (and @Metalcat and @Laura33 are valuable in much the same vein IMO);
  • @Le Poisson and @MrsProspector have done more than anyone else to make this a real community offline for me, and challenged me to start CMMW which has brought so much into my life;
  • @Syonyk and @sol about hewing to your values and describing the world as you see it even if it means breaking with consensus;
  • @tooqk4u22 was my first internet nemesis in the investor alley and taught me a lot about financial markets and about not being a dick on the internet, without once stooping to murder;
  • @Bakari was the poster who most embodied of the three best traits of our way of life - frugal, joyful, and weird (honorable mentions @meadow lark and @Zikoris); and
  • In very different ways each, @Nords, @Daley, and @SwordGuy are the best role models any community could ask for at paying it forward.

But I will also say, at Camp Mustache events I meet a lot of people who are only marginally attached to the forums. Some of the wisest, most thoughtful, and most fun people at camp lurk and never post, or they're very irregular posters with 12 or 30 posts over 5 years on the site. I think it's such a testament to this community how dense it is with people of great quality who in any other context would be the most interesting person you would meet in a whole month.

Thank you all!  And yes, paying it forward.

As has been pointed out, I like to write.  I get plenty of practice here, as well as ideas for new blog posts and book chapters.

But I will also say, at Camp Mustache events I meet a lot of people who are only marginally attached to the forums. I’ve tremendously enjoyed my Camp Mustaches, yet I’ve also felt as though I’m hogging a ticket if I keep going every year and deprive someone else of an opportunity.

I was very happy to be there watching the discussions that led to the start of CampFI events.  But I have zero interest in ascending Mt. Si ever again.

Seconding this about @secondcor521 . His advice is always great and well thought out. He also takes the time to explain things at an indivudual level so that less knowledgeable people (i.e. me) can understand. I like his posts even when he's scaring me with "Real Life' info!

Seriously though, there are quite a few people here who have a wealth of knowledge on so many different topics. The education here is great and people's openness makes it a great community too. I'm thankful to have learned all that I have and to try and pass that on to others as they're making their own FIRE journey.

Wow, I'm shocked to find my name this list. I immediately thought of a bunch of other people that I would have on my own list (i.e. not me). I'm happy to see most of them have been added. Sometimes I worry that this forum is losing traction, but this reminder of how many people still contribute actively warms my heart. I'd love to go to All The Meetups, but getting DH to Moab was a serious challenge. Hopefully, I can convince him to do other meetups in the future. Meeting mustachian folks IRL is so much fun! If you have the chance to go to a Meetup, take it! You'll be glad you did.

To take this in a different direction, there are a voices that have come and gone whose voices I miss. Boarder42 is one. The next one, I've connected with IRL, so if course I can only think of her IRL name, but she called her BF "Swan", and wanted to start a family, if that helps. I also miss Dagiffy01, who was the first mustachian I invited to our house for tacos and laundry. He was the guy living in his Chevy Bolt in the Bay Area. There was a woman from NY who wanted to move to "Storybook Land" (I think). Her husband was a musician and they had a little girl. All I can think of is "Spider" and I know that's on the right track, but not it. Maybe some of you young'uns with more sticky brain cells can fil in my mental blanks.

It's kind of ironic that three of the four on this list got themselves banned, but they still had an impact before they flamed out. I know at least one of them is still doing well. I wish the same for all of them.

I was thrilled to see a post from @sol recently. It got cited in the "Best Post" thread twice!

Oh, and @Daley went out of is way to help me tease something out of my brain that had a direct benefit for a NP I support in my community. A true collaboration that I am extremely grateful for.

We have formed a lovely friendship with the @Embok's as a result of meeting them in Moab. It's fair to say their IRL friendship has enriched our lives. She's crazy busy, but when she has a moment to put thoughts to paper - wowza!

And thought I know he's still around, I miss Joe's voice, story, and pictures. He knows who he is, lol!

@Dicey - was the one lady serpentstooth? She's been off for like 8 years but I also remember her fondly! wooljaguar is the one who wanted to start a family with Swan- she was on OMD for a while but I haven't seen her in a while. She might just be really busy! I had no idea any of the ones you mentioned had been banned... And then there was norabird! I hope she is well.

I certainly don’t think Pete should be excluded!

Nor should any of the moderators who have worked very hard to maintain the forum over a long time.

It’s also important to recognise the people, including @MaybeBabyMustache, @PhilB and @never give up who’ve given us a lot of financial food for thought over the years, as they’ve gradually explored their financial opportunities.

Ooh, love those sticky brain cells! You are right on both counts. Thank you, LBF!

WJ stayed at my place in the Desert once, so I still have her number. Maybe I'll shoot her a text and tell her we're talking about her, lol.

I have a funny story with serpentstooth from many years ago - she's friends with my boyfriend's friend's sister and they were talking about an article she'd seen with me and my boyfriend talking about FIRE stuff. The friend was like, "oh yeah, I know him, he plays DnD with my brother every week" - permanently cementing with Serpent the idea that Vancouver is a podunk town where everyone knows everyone.

OMG, can you possibly get word to her that she is missed? I remember once I put out an APB for help with a chocolate cake I was baking for an event. She was sooooo helpful. I think of her every time I make a cake.

I was excited and happy to see @sol back again but sadly SOL has left the building again due to various legit reasons. I've always enjoyed his posts since he tends to be on the more "frugal because he likes it" side and has lillte fear of calling out big consumer spending.   Plus he's very very handsome ;-).

I miss Serpent'sTooth too.  One of her friends updated us a couple of years ago, and said she was doing well.   And Axecleaver.  I understand why he left, but I really miss his voice and experience.   Joe is always missed.   He's here occasionally, (you can see him on 'who's online') but he rarely posts.

All of the people on everyone's lists are great, including you Dicey!

I rarely participate in journals anymore and deleted myself out of most of thems as too hard to keep up with - especially on a tiny phone using data. But I do keep up with a few of them and have to say I really miss @Jon_Snow (AKA my Wonder Twin) journal. His transformation after FIRE and the life he lived was very inspirational. I do follow some others and of course @Sailor Sam as members of the Brotherhood/Sisterhood of the long blue line. Plus her colorful use of profanity is spectacular!!

Thanks, guys!  I have to put Metalcat at the top of the pantheon.  But I'm not going to fill out my own list, because I am absolutely crap at names, and so there's just no way I can possibly remember the posters who first made a huge impact on me years ago (or even, you know, last week), and whatever list I made would exclude others equally worthy, and then I would feel bad that I forgot someone.

But IMO the bigger issue is that it is all the voices who engage -- and the moderators who work hard to keep that engagement respectful -- that makes this place special to me.  There are so few places where you can see all the different points of view (many of which I would never have thought of myself) and be able to have actual real discussions and disagreements, without sinking into the morass of iternet name-calling (well, most of the time).  I value having a place that isn't just sound bites, party-line dogma, and/or bullshit, where a bunch of grown-up humans actually act like grown-ups and discuss things that actually matter.  And, you know, some that don't, just for fun.  ;-)

A-fucking-men to this as well.

This place has stayed remarkable for an exceptional number of years. I cannot overstate how much I've learned here, and how much I trust this place to offer tremendously well informed perspectives.
