Best post fire side hustle, for couples?
« on: December 12, 2016, 11:34:11 AM »
Anyone out there have any experience or interesting thoughts on side hustles for a married couple post FIRE?

Looking for something low stress (or maybe even fun) where we could work together, the $ isn't all that important. Flexibility in scheduling would be a plus, but i know you can't have everything.

When I was in college I worked in Yellowstone NP during a couple of summers (not a ranger), there were always retired couples that ran the gift shops or the hotel/cabins front desk.  The company that ran the guest side of YNP would take room and board out of your check, I do not remember what that cost was but depending on your pay I think it was like 2-3 days worth of work and depending on your position you could work just enough to cover that cost.  If you lived in your own RV I believe it was cheaper than staying in the provided cabin/room.  I think the assignments were usually at least 3 months long but could be extended if you wanted to.

I dream about doing that with my husband when we retire.  Maybe Denali in the summer and the Grand Canyon in the winter?

I've been bringing in some serious side $$ by doing weekday dog walks for busy working people. If you live in a HCOLA or even MCOLA, a lot of people are willing to pay a lot of money to have their dogs walked while they're at work.

I live in a HCOLA. I put an ad on craiglist as a dog walker, and had a few responses within a day... The great thing is I'd go out walking my own dog every day anyway, but this way I make money and can't ever cop out of my daily walk. I charge $15 for an hour of walking, and I think that's on the low side for that amount of time. At two dogs per weekday, that's a nice $600 cash per month. I also pick up and drop off.

I've seen people out with 5-7 dogs. That's too many for me, but if you have the physical strength, that's a lot of cash!

I've done a little in-home pet care as well, and have considered signing up for rover.com, but not sure I'm that committed just yet. $50/night. Cash. Old sleepy dogs are best. :-)

Great info! that would be easy and fun for me, wife and our dog! FYI i think my aunt signed up for rover a while back. She said when she hosted dogs (and this could be because she has 2 of her own) they almost always peed in her house, even if they were housetrained.

Start an AirBnb if you live in a somewhat desirable location.

I have a family friend who does the dog walking and house sitting thing. He makes about $70k/yr cash because he lives in a HCOL area with many, many wealthy clients.

Ooh, I like this.  Get some exercise, enjoy a walk, get paid.  Can do with kids, and turn it over to them when they get old enough so they can earn spending money.

Nude modelling as a couple for art schools.  This is coveted but so hard to find.

Why would they want couples? The art classes I took that had nude models were always single, though I suppose it would be more complex to have to draw two people in perspective. That would be great strength training too, because they had to be immobile for so long!

If one of you knows how to sail (and can obtain a USCG 50 ton License) and the other knows how to cook, and you can both get along with people you can operate a charter catamaran in the Caribbean.  From what I've researched you earn about 50,000 in a 20-25 week season.  Granted those 20-25 weeks you are most likely working every single day.

So it's not so much of a side hustle as it is a lifestyle for half the year.

Sounds like a great idea that I could do also.
Now, are there any permit, liability, or insurance considerations to worry about?

Do you guys know about the Caretaker's Gazette ?  It's now at caretaker.org -- great if you're not tied down to anything and like to move around.

I am also interested in info on liability, insurance, etc. for pet-related side hustles. I'm guessing you are entering people's houses when they are not there? Also, the animal is your responsibility while under your care - what do you do should the animal have a medical emergency or get loose from you?

We are snowbirds an spend winter months in the SW.  We hire a person to "house sit/watch" during the months we are not here.  We live in a gated/golf community, and there are quite a few people who do this as a "side hustle."  We pay $10/visit - they come once a week.  We get a short email weekly from this person that "all is well in your home."   If you get enough homes, the money can be good!

THANK YOU, I felt like a dirty old woman for thinking that as soon as I read the title, and then even more once I read the OP. Low stress, fun, flexible schedule, work together... LOL!
