Best gift

What are some of the best gifts you've ever received?

The recent post about gifts that keep taking made me think of some really great gifts I've gotten in the past year.  https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/gifts-that-keep-on-taking/?topicseen

Of course there are always some duds, but this Christmas was pretty awesome.  One of my old interns stopped by for a visit and gave me a french press.  I already have one for coffee, the new one is designated for tea only.  I had been using a plastic IngenuiTea that needed replacement.  She must have heard me comment that I was trying to transition away from plastics and to glass.  Awesome gift.  I use it daily.

One of my professors put money on my tab at the local quilt supply shop.  That still makes me grin.

What made those gifts so awesome was not only the utter usefulness of them, but also the fact that I didn't expect anything, but each of those people paid attention to my likes and surprised me.  Super awesome.

For Christmas 2012 my mom and my brother went together and got me a pair of boots I'd been eyeing.  The three of use went shopping and out to lunch and I think of that every time I wear the boots.  They will last me for years and years too.

I got useful stuff this Christmas, which I love. My favorite by far has been a lunchbox (pictured below). Also incredibly useful and wonderful: socks, a bathrobe, long sleeved shirt, season tickets to the local civic theater.

The best gifts I receive are those that are functional, or that I can somehow use to obtain things that are functional.

My mom gave me a jelly-roll pan and cooling rack for Christmas, which I've used for all kinds of things.

Someone at work gave me a $100 Amazon gift card (!) when I moved, and I used it to purchase new pots and pans, which I desperately needed.

Other than functional gifts, I still like to receive books. I have more in the stack than I have time to read, but sometimes I get books as gifts that I want to own (rather than borrow) but would never buy for myself. And that's nice. :-)

My absolute very favorite gift was from my husband. It's a pottery barn gallery frame with 12 slots for 4x6 pics and he filled it with pictures of the two of us in various locales around the world. I LOVE that gift. Makes me smile every time I see it.

My mom's gift for any of us for graduation is a trip--some of my best memories have been from those trip-gifts. :-) She also hand-made me and my sister our own porcelain doll look-a-likes one year.

I'm not sure what would be my BEST GIFT EVER, but my boyfriend bought me a cookbook holder a few weeks ago that sort of props a book up and holds the pages open, and it's been FANTASTIC - I've probably used it a dozen times so far. So nice not having to use random things to keep my cookbook pages open.

In a Christmas exchange years ago, my supervisor at work gave me a fuzzy steering wheel cover because our parking lot had no shade and I was always complaining about burning my hands on my black steering wheel.  It was inexpensive, but so thoughtful because he was actually paying attention to me as an individual.  It obviously made an impact, because it still comes to mind now, almost 25 years later.

I was given a neat knit hat with LED lights built in for seeing where you are going in the dark.

Wife also gave me coffee beans which are a very good but too pricey for me to buy them for myself.  Not that that stops me from enjoying them while they last!

Mother-in-law hand-knit me a badass winter hat, fleece-lined and all.  I cherish that hat.

I had my daughter on my birthday and my son on my anniversary, so no one can beat those presents!

My husband one year ordered yarn and a pattern for me for a jacket that I really wanted to make, but couldn't justify the cost of. So not only did I get enjoyment making it, I also get enjoyment wearing it.
