Best country to retire to
« on: April 17, 2014, 12:36:26 PM »
So I have been thinking about where I want to spend the rest of my life when I am fully retired. And there seam to be so many great countries with a low cost of living. This made me think about the best country to retire. The money I spend at the moment and use to live a relatively frugal lifestyle would let me live the life of a king in many countries around the world. Has anyone identified the best countries to move to? Somewhere in Asia? or maybe south america? I am currently strongly leaning towards south Africa. but I am sure there are many more countries that are quite good.

I've heard some good arguments that the answer is: USA! USA!

But I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Money isn't everything, you know.  I can't offhand think of many places that combine a pleasant* climate, mountains, and minimum of crowding with a much lower cost of living.  The southern parts of Chile & Argentina, perhaps.  New Zealand's South Island sounds like a great place, but COL I think might be even higher than the US.

*To me: if your tastes run to hot and humid, you have more choices.

My answer on this is constantly shifting-- I have a lot of relatives in Southern France, so anyplace with an affordable mediterranean climate would be amazing to me-- High on the list of fantasies would be a small town or city on the Dalmatian coast somewhere.
