Balance transfer for more than I owe on the credit card?
« on: March 16, 2020, 03:46:42 PM »
I want more cash so I can keep investing while the stocks are on sale. Idea: Get a 0% APR (for 15 months or whatever) credit card with no-fee balance transfers and request a transfer of MORE than the current balance on one of my other cards. If I do this, will the bank just send me a check for the difference?

I understand the risks here, but I wouldn't be taking out anything that I couldn't pay back in 12-15 months. Think of it as a 0% interest loan or same-as-cash stock buying. My question is whether this is possible or if the bank will just block the balance transfer if the transfer amount is greater than the balance on the card.

Chase and bank of america have promotional cash-advance offers - 4% and 3% fees with 0 interest until May 2021 and June 2021 respectively. These are on existing accounts.

I'm making a gambit and taking the money, and paying down slowly, betting I'll be able to do another balance transfer next spring. I think I can raise about $50K this way in the next few weeks this way. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, I could actually do this with those access checks that one of my credit card issuers sends me. But the fee...

Chase Slate has 0% on balance transfers with no fee for a certain time period. What I'm thinking about doing is moving a balance to that card or another one with identical specs. I'm just wondering if I can move an amount in excess of the actual balance on an existing card and expect the bank to send me a check for the difference.

I doubt it would work, but maybe. If you do send too much as a normal payment, I think you could have a credit balance and maybe even eventually you'd get a check. Might be a couple of months though.

The only 'catch' is not knowing when you'll get the check.
American Express sends one the next month.  I always round up my payments and they sent me a check for $0.56.
For others, you might have to call and request a check.  Just tell them you sent the check to the 'wrong' account...
