Backpackers, hikers or canoe expeditionists?
« on: January 19, 2014, 10:28:58 AM »
I feel that money spent to get a person outside is a great investment. Help me prove it here - post up some non indoor photos!

I'll start

I heartily agree!

This one is from Cooper Ridge in the Cascades in norther Washington.  It was a beautiful labour day weekend.  Blue skies and more wild flowers than you could imagine was possible.  Heaven.

A room with a view.

A few hours of hiking in Yosim got us this lovely few of Half Dome.  Million dollar view.  But I think the permit cost ~$20?  Can't get that in the crowded car camps!

I am a long distance sea kayaker. I have kayaked amongst orca pods, and have laid my hand upon the head of an injured harbour porpoise (hit by a boat I think), and I am still haunted by what I saw when I looked into its eye as it struggled to keep its blowhole above water.

I have seen many such things that will not soon leave my memory. My current job keeps me from doing this as much as I would like, so I am saving 80% of my income so I can quit my job and paddle the waters of the Salish Sea whenever I wish.

Man I need to do some more serious outdoor stuff. I've just been hiking in a couple areas in the cascades up off of Route 2, and SR20. Nothing like that though.

Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. It's a pretty cool place to go, but I didn't really feel that you needed to spend a week at the park like others I have been to.

Acadia and Grand Canyon definitely needed more time than the long weekends I went to each. I will be going to Glacier/Yellowstone for a week this summer, and potentially Banff NP in Alberta as well. And I live close enough to North Cascades NP/Mt. Rainier NP that I can there basically whenever I have a free weekend.

Man...  That makes me so sad.  We missed Crater Lake on our year-long frolic around the country this past year since we planned to visit it *right* after the government shut down.  We missed several other places as well, but this is the place I was most disappointed about missing.  Your photo is just stunning!

How the Owls spend Christmas morning - back East at the (COLD) Dolly Sods, WV!

Christmas Day 2013 - not a soul in the Monongahela outside of us:

2012 - The E-P-I-C 11km trek to the Skoke Lodge in Banff (should be on your life list):

The Owls are very well at home in the cold and snow.

Upper Missouri River, Montana. 4 day trip and not another soul to be seen.
One of the most relaxing yet adventurous and exploratory canoe trips I've ever been on.
Its really inexpensive too!
