Back on the bike - hopefully
« on: December 03, 2013, 07:18:29 AM »
I live 3 miles from work and today I will attempt to ride my bicycle for the first time since April.

I had been forced into the car for several months, but could ride my dual sport motorcycle lately. Before I even started reading MMM I got a place close to work so that I could avoid a long commute and traffic - I loathe traffic (which is why I'm moving soon and it has the side benefit of a lower cost of living place). I biked almost every day to work, but then I dislocated my shoulder out hiking one day last April. Apparently I always do things hard core because physical therapy wasn't improving it and eventually I needed surgery. Because of work commitments I wasn't able to get the surgery until October (being retired or FI wouldn't have delayed that). I just took a spin around the neighborhood, and while I still can't walk my dog more than a mile without pain unless I use the sling, I think the bike holds the arm stable enough. I will be going slow and ride much more tame than normal (it is a full suspension mountain bike I got off craigslist so I tend to jump curbs and cut through the trees and such).

So today I will ride to my physical therapy appointment!

Congrats on getting back on the bike!

I just started biking to work 9 months ago, but now that snow has swept through Wisconsin, I won't be biking until the roads are completely clear. I can deal with the -5 degrees since the ride in only 10 -15 minutes, but the slush and snow make it impossible.

Congrats, I biked to work for two months before I got a stress injury and have been in a boot for five months, getting my MRI results today.  I hope to heal eventually and get back on my bike as well.  I live only 3.5 miles from work so hope to be healed soon.

Well, it was a success. I have to remain seated and take it easy, but not real pain so looks like I'm back to bike commuting. Had I know I was going to be out of commission this long I would have got a recumbent trike.
